Dentist Sink Their Teeth into Technology
It's a kinder and gentler world at the dentists office these days. Many of the scary needles and drills are being replaced by high tech equipment that didn't even exist a few years ago. One such piece of dental technology is the intraoral camera.
(PRWEB) December 26, 2004 -- Dentists have always had a hard time seeing clearly inside the mouth. After all it's dark in there and that little mirror and light weren't always enough. Enter the intraoral camera, a small but powerful video camera encased in a flexible wand. The wand is placed inside of a patient's mouth and the video is fed to a television monitor. The result is a magnification of the inside of a patient's mouth up to 40 timmes.
Images can be frozen on the screen and even printed out on a Polaroid-like photo for insurance documentation or education.
The camera allows for a more accurate diagnosis. Leaks or breaks in fillings that used to go unnoticed often leading to root canals, can now be found and treated before any major damage is done.
Dr. Ara Nazarian says that the camera also gets the patient more involved in their oral health. "It's one thing to be told you have a crack in your tooth, it's quite another to see it on the screen."
Dr. Nazarian is a member of the American Academy of Cosmetic dentistry and the Academy of General Dentistry. Currently he is the only dentist in Michigan to have received the Excellence in Dentistry Award.
