John Lee Hooker, Jr. Wraps Up 2004 With Grammy and W.C. Handy Nominations
The son of Blues legend John Lee Hooker continues to garner praise for his debut CD "Blues With A
Vengeance" on Kent Records.
(PRWEB) December 26, 2004 -- Blues singer John Lee Hooker, Jr. recently returned from his European tour to enjoy the holidays with family in Northern California, only to learn that he'd been nominated for not one, but two, prestigious industry awards.
In early December of 2004, the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences announced the artists debut CD "Blues With A Vengeance" as a nominee for the 47th Annual Grammy Awards in the Traditional Blues Album category. Other nominees in this category include Eric Clapton, Etta James, James Cotton, and Pinetop Perkins. The winner will be announced on February 13, 2005 in Los Angeles just prior to the televised ceremonies at Staples Center.
Topping off the news of the Grammy nod was the most recent announcement by the Blues Foundation in Memphis nominating the same CD for its distinguished W.C. Handy Award in the Best New Artist Debut category. Winners of this esteemed blues community award will be announced on May 5, 2005 at the Memphis Cook Convention Center in downtown Memphis, Tennessee.
Moreover, "Blues With A Vengeance", was recently named 2004s Outstanding Blues Album of the Year by the California Music Awards (formerly the BAMMYS), proving that John Lee Hooker, Jr., the son of a blues legend from another era, has without doubt made his mark as a true bluesman for today. Steeped in tradition while pushing the boundaries, Hookers CD is, unconditionally, as up-to-date as the genre comes, eloquently parading his own handcrafted brand of scorching modern blues.
A recent review in Living Blues Magazine said of Mr., Hooker, "It's extremely difficult to do what J.L.H. Jr. has done here: confront both the blessing and the burden of being heir to one of the music's most daunting legacies, while still retaining one's own identity." Writer David Whiteis goes on to say that the album "introduces the younger Hooker as a protean talent of great potential, as well as significant already-realized gifts."
John Lee Hooker, Jr. continues to tour with his band in support of "Blues With A Vengeance." Upcoming appearances include a special New Years Eve show at Biscuits & Blues in his hometown of San Francisco. More information and a complete list of tour dates can be found at www.onthehookblues.com.
