Abrons Arts Center/Henry Street Settlement Presents at Home: Visions of Our Place in the World

Grimanesa Amoros, Leora Cheshin, Susan Hamburger, Elizabeth Huey, Kam Mak, Carol Markel, Henrik Rehr, Mel Rosenthal, Tara Sabharwal, Steve Sabella, William Villalongo, Micki Watanabe, Paul Wong and Suikang Zhao are among the 20 artists featured in a visual exploration of the concept of HOME. Curated by Lois Stavsky, the exhibit will open on January 6th and continue through March 1, 2005.

(PRWEB) December 29, 2004 -- What is home? What does it mean to feel at home at a time when so many of us identify with more than one homeland or culture? How is home linked to memory and growth? How does it feel to return home? What is our fantasy home?

The 20 artists selected to participate in At Home: Visions of Our Place in the World answer these questions with styles and rhythms representing a rich variety of cultural and social perspectives.

While the shifting nature of cultural identity as related to place is suggested by some artwork, other images present home as an emblem of stability and permanence.

While some artists allude to the mysteries lurking beneath the façade of a seemingly secure shelter, others recreate the symbols of comfort and contentment that the traditional notion of home suggests.

With irony and wit, several artists challenge the conventional role of home. They recreate it as a deliciously inventive site, conjuring fanciful images and as a mythical place, magically transforming reality.

All of the works collectively contribute to a provocative dialogue on the meaning of home.

With paintings, installations, sculptures, drawings, photographs and comic art ranging from the personal to the political, At Home invites us to visually explore our place in the world.

A reception for the artists will be held on Thursday, January 6th from 6-8pm.

The Abrons Arts Center is located at 466 Grand Street on Manhattans Lower East Side.
