Schools in Nassau and Suffolk counties will compete Saturday, March 6th at Newsday in the Seventh Annual African American History Bowl sponsored by 100 Black Men of Long Island, Inc.
This yearÂs African American History Bowl will include competition from the middle schools and high schools. The middle school competition starts at 9 a.m., with the high school competition following at 1 p.m. Déjà Vu, Power 105.1.FM, air personality, will host the morning session. Steph Lova, Power 105.1 FM, air personality, will host the afternoon session. The judges will be Dr. Aubrey Bonnett, American Studies Professor, SUNY Westbury, and Dr. Gloria Graves Holmes, Director of Master of Arts in Teaching Program, Quinnipiac University.
The fast-paced History Bowl is open to students of all backgrounds and will test students knowledge of African American history and culture. Students, school advisors and family will attend to cheer on the participants. Four students will win $500.00 scholarships for college and tuition expenses. The winners will be eligible to participate in the national competition in June during the 100 Black Men of Americana, Inc. annual conference in Miami.
The daylong event will be held at the headquarters of Newsday in Melville. Newsday, the nationÂs fifth largest metropolitan daily newspaper, serves Long Island and New York City as the premiere source of local news and comprehensive national and international reporting. Newsday is a subsidiary of Tribune Co., a leading multi-media company whose properties include 11 newspapers and 22 television stations, including WB 11 in New York.
The 100 Black Men of Long Island chapter, in existence for over 25 years, is actively involved in community and educational projects in Nassau and Suffolk counties.
