SAN FRANCISCO, CA (PRWEB) March 22, 2004 --B. Eric Rhoads Chairman of Streamline Publishing, Inc, has announced the appointment of L. Diane Johnson, PSA NAPA NAPPAP, as Editor of its new fine art publication, Plein Air Magazine. The monthly publication, which will be released this spring, is the first magazine devoted to the fine art of Plein air art collecting and painting. The high-quality full color magazine will be distributed to an audience of art collectors and painters and cover the growing plein air movement worldwide.

Diane Johnson brings over 25 years experience as an internationally recognized painter and instructor in the U.S. and Europe. She has received numerous awards for her work, is a full member of the Pastel Society of America, National Academy of Plein air Painters, and National Acrylic Painters Association (UK). In recognition of her accomplishments she is listed in Whos Who in American Art, Whos Who in the South and Southwest and was invited to participate in the first White House Conference on Culture and Diplomacy. In addition to painting, Diane is a published author in the area of art business and an experienced business executive and marketer.

I am thrilled to be a part of this groundbreaking publication which will bring collectors and artists together to advance the plein air painting tradition," Diane explains.

Rhoads said, Passion is critical to our success. Diane is passionate about Plein air painting and collecting, and also has the rare skill set necessary to edit such a publication. We conducted a one-year search and concluded that Diane was the perfect fit. Were fortunate to have her."

Plein Air Magazine will feature many genres of fine art painting, including non-living and living artists. The publication will pride itself on fine quality color plate reproductions of images. This is the first publication designed for collectors and artists in one volume with sections for both. According to Rhoads, Unlike any other type of fine art, the artists and collectors are often together at events and collectors are fascinated by the creation of these works. This publication will advance the relationship between the creation and the collection of fine art."

Plein air has its roots in the academic tradition of fine art— a form of painting employed by master artists tracing back to the 16th century. The term en plein air" is a French term and literally means "open air" or "in the open air." For painters this describes where they paint — out of doors on location. Historical records suggest that many of the great masters painted on location in order to capture the true essence of color and light. During the late 1800's the impressionists popularized out door painting coinciding with the invention of oil paint in tubes., However, long before paint tubes were available, historical accounts indicate many artists ground and mixed pigments then placed them in animal bladders to prevent drying while others would grind pigments to mix paint in the field.

The American impressionism movement started in the late 1800's in the Eastern United States, primarily in New York and Connecticut; then painters migrated westward to document the untouched lands yet to be discovered. Many painters followed the Gold Rush west, which was the beginning of California becoming a prominent area for outdoor painting. Today the plein air movement is very much alive and growing rapidly across the United States. Hundreds of groups of painters are springing up around the world. There is a strong sense of belonging, of companionship, and a common love to create beautiful paintings. We feel it is our role to characterize this movement and nurture it," said Diane Johnson. Though many plein air paintings are landscapes many also include figures, still life and portraits. Some painters paint on location create an in-studio painting with more detail using their painted outdoor sketch as a reference for color, light and composition. All media are employed in plein air works including oil, acrylic, pastel, watercolor, and sketching. The magazine will cover collecting and creating in all of these forms.

To receive a free copy of the premiere collector's edition, collectors and painters can sign up by going to www.pleinairmagazine.com or calling 800-610-5771; out of the US 561-655-8778. The magazine will be produced monthly.
