Swell is an alternative art space located at 2902 Saratoga Blvd. Corpus Christi, Texas 78415 in between Corpus Christi Academy and Bishop Garriga Middle School. Swell is the first art space of it's kind in Corpus Christi. It's the end result of ambitious artistic vision; a melting of art, music, culture and community into one creative entity. Swell showcases fresh artistic talent in a venue that allows for investigation and experimentation. The goal is to expose a community to contemporary art by bringing in artists to showcase in an area that may have otherwise been overlooked. Swell's laid back and casual atmoshpere make it inviting for the casual art viewer while keeping a level of sophistication that will interest even the toughest of critics.
Owned and operated by local artist, John Medina, Swell was established in March of 2004 in an effort to make contemporary art more accessible to Corpus Christi. Though Corpus Christi is rich in traditional art, it is lacking a contemporary art scene. By establishing a permanent venue where new and exciting artists will be allowed to showcase, Swell artspace will expose the community to fresh new contemporary art, new ideas, and new perspectives.
Swell represents an effort to build an all-inclusive community of artists and art appreciators, and to begin a dialog in Corpus Christi about contemporary art. Plans for group art shows, musical acts, a film series, and cookouts are underway. Art, music, film and people are the ingredients. Swell is the catalyst.
Contemporary art is Swell.
