Theresa (Terri) Malone Named to New Nevada Minority Affairs Commission

Theresa (Terri) Malone has been named alternate member of the new Nevada Commission on Minority Affairs. Malone is an elected member of the Nevada State Board of Education.

(PRWEB) April 28, 2004 --Theresa (Terri) Malone, elected member, Nevada Board of Education, has been appointed to the Nevada Commission on Minority Affairs as an alternate member.

Malone stated, Education for all our students is of vital importance, however, we need to be ever mindful that a part of Nevadas population differing from others in some characteristics, fails one or more of the Nevada High School Proficiency Examinations, and frequently drops out of school because they dont think they can get or hold down a job. We have found tools to help and to motivate students to attend college, but clear identification of the causes of failing students does not get sufficient attention. This commissions charge has the responsibility to identify and offer answers."

The commission members will
    (1) Study matters affecting the social and economic welfare and well-being of minorities,
    (2) Collect and disseminate information on activities, programs and essential services for minorities,
    (3) Study the availability for employment and the manner in which minorities are employed,
    (4) Study how minorities can be encouraged to start and manage their own businesses successfully,
    (5) Study the availability of affordable housing, and, in cooperation with the Nevada Equal Rights Commission, act as a liaison for informing the public regarding:

-Nevada laws that prohibit discriminatory practices,
-Procedures for filing complaints and taking actions to remedy discriminatory practices.
-Create networks within the business community between minority-owned businesses and businesses not owned by minorities.
-Advise the Governor on matters relating to and of concern to minorities.

The first meeting of the Nevada Commission on Minority Affairs will be held today, April 26, 2004.
