Working Artists, as Themselves
BWACs Artists Speak Series, Weekends May through June
(PRWEB) May 10, 2004 -- As the cultural craze over reality television continues to heat up with new shows, tougher trials, bigger defeats, and greater successes, BWAC (Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Coalition) is offering the public a free, not to be missed, real-life opportunity: a look into the lives of the true risk takers, the artists. When it comes to taking monumental risks, striving against society, and dismissing the better judgment of family and friends, the artists have always led the way, part visionaries, part explorers in a life-long search for meaning, beauty, and expression.
The Artists Speaks Series represents the vivid diversity found among artists and their works, in particular the artists of BWAC. With a talk taking place on each weekend from May 16th through June 26th the various speakers will celebrate their lives as artists, speak about art, art-making, techniques, philosophies, their inspirations, and their creative paths. The series takes place in the midst of this years Pier Art Show 12, surrounded by over 1000 works by more than 300 artists, inside a revitalized warehouse on the historic Red Hook waterfront. During some of these events fellow BWAC artists will be called upon to talk further about the artwork at hand as well as give impromptu talks on their own artworks.
Although the artist talks are mainly organized by regional interests, such as hearing from three Caribbean artists, Clifford Hobbs (Barbados), Glenford John (Dominica), and Lester Gunter (Jamaica) one weekend and the Latvian artist Anna Hagen the next, some events are purely subject-oriented. For example Priscilla Bain-Smith will present two talks on Monet, Van Gogh and Gauguin. A few of the events have already drawn interest for their uniqueness, Orthodox Jewish Women Talk Art," where two artists will speak on what moves them to create their special images and a talk by Takeshi Yamada who will relate his fascinating portraits.
All in all there is something for everyone and unlike the Apprentice," no one gets fired," youll just get fired-up about art.
