Former State Senator Qualifies for Gwinnett House Race
Former DeKalb State Senator George Warren has qualified to run against Democrat incumbent Pedro Marin in Gwinnett House District 96.
(PRWEB) May 11, 2004 --Former DeKalb County State Senator George Warren announced today that he is seeking the Republican nomination for the 96th District House seat. The 96th District encompasses a large part of Norcross and unincorporated Duluth; bounded on the south by I-85 from the DeKalb line to Pleasant Hill; and bounded along the west and north by Winters Chapel, Jones Mill Lane, and both sides of Peachtree Corners Circle; then Holcomb Bridge, Peachtree Industrial, Langford to Old Norcross Rd., and out to Pleasant Hill.
Warren has lived in the 96th District of Gwinnett for the past 3 years, where he is active in his Homeowners Association. He was born and reared in DeKalb County. He is married, with 3 children, and 3 grandchildren; both he and his wife are active members of Grace Church in Duluth.
A graduate of Georgia State University, he began his business career in his fathers business, the L. C. Warren Refrigeration Company on Memorial Drive. When the family business was sold in 1968, he embarked on his own; founding a successful real estate, insurance and investment firm, from which he retired in 2001.
The candidate was a State Senator from DeKalb County in the 1970s. While there, he was the first non-lawyer to serve on the Special Judiciary Committee, where he helped write a new death penalty law; the old law having been declared unconstitutional by the U S Supreme Court. He also served on the Appropriations Committee, generally considered the most important committee, because it disburses the money. Warren stated the State budget has increased 17 fold since 1974, and asked how many household incomes have seen such an increase. I will work to reign in State spending," he pledged. He is also the author of state law making possible the ownership of real estate by joint owners, with the right of survivorship. Previously, such easy transferal upon death was impossible in Georgia.
Warren said he decided to run because the incumbent had voted against the Protection of Marriage Amendment, and supported legislation to grant drivers licenses to illegal immigrants. Present law only requires such identification to register and vote. The candidate stated he does not feel the majority of his district is in agreement with his opponents positions.
The former legislator said after devoting the last 28 years to building a business, he looks forward to re-entering the political arena, and concentrating his full energies on serving all the constituents of the 96th District. His platform will include holding the line on taxes, protecting property rights, preserving the Hope scholarship and the environment. Additionally he is pledged to meeting the needs of senior citizens, and getting tougher with lawbreakers.
Warren stated he intends to run a grass roots campaign, walking neighborhoods, visiting subdivision coffees, placing yard signs at the appropriate time, and discussing the issues with all concerned citizens. Those wishing to participate in Warrens campaign in any way may reach him at 770-840-9088. He wants to encourage individual participation in his effort to bring government back to the voters of the 96th district.
