100.com to Rival Traditional Search Engines

100.com has been launched as a new search engine to compete with Yahoo!, Google, Looksmart and others. Designed primarily as a meta search engine, 100.com's focus will be to deliver the 100 most relevant results for each search term.

(PRWEB) May 11, 2004 -- 100.com has been launched as a new search engine to compete with Yahoo!, Google, Looksmart and others. Designed primarily as a meta search engine, 100.com's focus will be to deliver the 100 most relevant results for each search term. The project has been three years in the making.

100.com already provides 60 top categories under which search terms are indexed, and each of these has been edited and ranked to provide the 100 most relevant Web sites for each of those categories.

100.com will employ editors who will regularly review, monitor, edit and rank popular search terms.

The site also provides an extensive online news service, which extends to several hundred categories, providing news for all main topics, and for each major city, country and region in the world.

Users will be able to customise the site, selecting their individual preferences for colors, lay-out, news headlines, weather, personal link manager, calendar, diary, and even foreign exchange rates.

A spokesman for 100.com, John McEvoy, said the new search engine would be extensively expanded in the years ahead by utilising editors to supplement the meta search and spidering capabilities that have been developed over the past three years.

"We are not concerned with trying to deliver thousands of results for each term, as the traditional search engines do, primarily because our efforts will be in delivering the most useful and relevant results in the 100 we provide. In any event our research tells us that 95% of users don't go past the first 20 or 30 results before finding what they are looking for," he said. "By focusing on the relevancy, and limiting the number of search results, we hope too to deliver quicker searches."

He added, "We've also designed our site to be a one-stop shop. We hope to attract regular users who will have instant local news, breaking headlines, weather, chat, diary, and facilities to manage their Internet requirements, as well as a comprehensive, relevant and fast search facility".
