Debut novel explores issues of gender, power, and sexuality
The announcement of the release of D.A. Arthur's debut novel, The Maverick Princess.
Reserve, LA (PRWEB) June 9, 2004 -- One evening three years ago, Louisiana native D.A. Arthur was watching a television program in which a beautiful girl with long red hair appeared. The next day, she typed in some words on an internet search engine. She looked on the bottom of the page and found a writeup on what would be the subject of her debut novel, The Maverick Princess, published by PublishAmerica.
The Maverick Princess is the first in a scheduled series of novels centering around Kristina Valborg, crown princess of the fictitious Scandinavian kingdom of Vidaria, who lives by her own rules. The Maverick Princess details Kristina's coming of age amidst a male-dominated court and gentry. The books are very loosely based on the life of a real-life royal, Christina of Sweden, who lived in the seventeenth century.
When baby Kristina is born in the royal palace of Vidaria, she is immediately mistaken for the king's long-awaited male heir. This, however, is only the beginning of her problems. At the age of six, she tragically loses her father, and therefore becomes the ward of a regency council. She becomes an indefatigable student, devouring books as if they were candy, and her constant cross-dressing gives her guardians fits. Raised as a prince and a warrior, young Kristina is prepared to rule her father's kingdom, but is the kingdom ready for a female ruler?
