(PRWEB) June 18, 2004 -- CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" writer Ethlie Ann Vare was able to add real-life grit when the No. 1 show asked her to draw on her own experience in the penitentiary for an episode centered on a woman's prison. When the episode XX" aired on March 11, it drew raves, ratings and now is up for an Emmy nomination.

The honor would cap a lifetime of overcoming the odds for the colorful writer, who began her adult life behind bars and became an award-winning author, journalist and screenwriter.

Yet her success in Hollywood is based on more than her time in the California Institute for Women on drug charges by age 21. She has a unique flair for telling adventure stories about strong women. Vare has been outspoken -- too outspoken, some have said -- in calling for more action projects with intelligent female protagonists and emotional reality over testosterone. It's a bottom line issue," she says. More than half the audience is female, and they can tell the difference between women and men with boobs."

She was one of the original writer/producers on Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda" and has since written an original novel, The Broken Places," based in that world. She is now developing two bioflicks based on the lives of remarkable women discovered in her research on women inventors for the acclaimed book, Mothers of Invention."

The things she once had to hide -- the prison record and even her stint as a topless dancer -- is now a calling card. My agent puts it in a post-it note on my spec scripts. Go figure" she said.

Now she is listed in the International Who's Who of Women and has been a distinguished visiting lecturer at prestigious schools like George Mason University, the University of Pennsylvania, and even West Point. She's won a Maggie Award for her magazine work, an American Library Award for non-fiction, a Public Library Award for her first children's book, and a Prism Commendation for one of her television scripts.

She has also been a journalist E! Entertainment, NBC and Elle Magazine as well as Executive Editor of ROCK Magazine, and reviewer for the Hollywood Reporter, Daily Variety, and Billboard.

Ethlie Ann Vare is available for interviews, commentary, etc. Press contact: Nadine Jolson, Jolson Creative 310-4741-776, cell direct 310-614-3214 Email: nadine@jolsoncreative.com
