Doctor Deadbeat Dad Nabbed
Doctor Arrested by New York City Sheriff for Non-Payment of Child Support and Spousal Support
New York CIty, NY (PRWEB) June 21, 2004 -- Looks like its not going to be a very Happy Fathers Day for Dr. Gregory I.Berk, one of New York Citys most prominent Oncologists, as well as one of its most notorious deadbeat dads.
Early this morning, at approximately 8:00 AM, Dr. Gregory I. Berk was arrested and commited to the Bernard Carrick Correctional Facility in Lower Manhattan for non-payment of child support and spousal support.
On December 9, 2003, an Order of Arrest and Commitment had been issued against the good doctor" by Hon. Judith Gische of the Supreme Court of the State of New York, Manhattan County, for contempt of court based upon his willful and deliberate refusal to pay child support and spousal support. Dr. Berk has to date, accumulated approximately $291,000.00 in unpaid child support and spousal support. He will apparently be spending Fathers Day behind bars unless he comes up with approximately $85,000.00 in back support, an amount fixed by the Supreme Court to purge (cancel) his contempt. If he does not come up with the money, he has been sentenced to spend the next 30 days in jail.
After his divorce was finalized on March 14, 2003, Dr. Berk closed his lucrative private medical practices, liquidated virtually all of his assets and fled the jurisdiction of the State of New York. His ex-wifes attorney, LAURENCE P. GREENBERG, ESQ. commented, Unfortunately, due to the complexities of the divorce laws in the United States, it is very difficult to enforce New York Divorce Judgments and Support Orders in other states. Dr. Berk took advantage of this fact when he left New York to evade his obligation to support his two (2) children and ex-wife"
Mr. Greenberg indicated, Judge Gische directed, if Dr. Berk was found in New York, he would be arrested. You would think he would have stayed away, but this guy thinks he is above the law, and he is not!" Mr. Greenberg further commented, We spent months tracking Dr. Berks whereabouts. We were shocked to discover that he had planned to be a Guest Speaker at the Times Square Westin Hotel on June 19, 2004. Dr. Berk was scheduled to give Introductory Remarks at a Conference entitled The Emerging Role of Radioimmunotherapy in the Treatment of Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma."
Thereafter, with the complete cooperation of the New York City Sheriffs Office, Mr. Greenberg arranged a sting operation" for Dr. Berks immediate arrest.
Apparently, Dr. Berk assumed that he could sneak into town on the weekend undetected. What he failed to realize is that Laurence P. Greenberg, Esq. would not rest until justice was served.
Mr. Greenberg commented, This deadbeat dad deserves nothing more than to spend Fathers Day in the can. What is most disturbing is that he is a highly respected and trusted physician. He has brought shame to himself and his profession. He abandoned his family, disobeyed the law and finally is getting what he deserves".
