For the Dogs: Pup Protagonist Spins a Yarn for Kids

Summer reading isn't just for kids. Dogs and young readers are working together in a new literacy program in Los Angeles and Pasadena.

LOS ANGELES, CA (PRWEB) July 3, 2004 -- Petey is a personal trainer, motivational speaker, etiquette expert… and an author. Hes also a dog. And in the illustrated childrens picture book, FOREVER FRIENDS (ISBN # 1-931290-54-7, smallfellow press) he helps Skip, his young owner, with the day-to-day obstacles of home, school and social life.

This month hell also help youngsters in Los Angeles and Pasadena, courtesy of a new literacy trend called Reading to Dogs – where real therapy canines lend their ears to young readers in need of eager, non-judgmental listeners.

FOREVER FRIENDS, by clinical psychologist Barbara S. Cohen, is fast becoming the number one choice amongst four-legged (and two-legged) bookworms across the country. Narrated by Petey, the story depicts the special relationship between him and his best friend, Skip. "He has a hard time waking up for school, so I help him out a little," Petey says as he climbs into bed to lick Skips face.

Children involved in the after-school program, Barks & Books, in Pasadena will have the chance to read Peteys saga to pups at the Pasadena Public Library on July 8.

On July 10 at 1 p.m. author Barbara Cohen will read and sign books at Storyopolis, 116 N Robertson Blvd., Los Angeles. After the signing, children will read to and play with various animals provided by the non-profit organization, Kids-n-Pets, a group that teaches children positive life skills through the humane training of animals. Pet adoptions will also be available. For more details call Storyopolis at (310) 358-2500.
