To recognize Azie Taylor MortonÂs devotion to assisting those less fortunate, the Housing Authority of the City of Austin has established a new scholarship for low-income students attending Huston-Tillotson College with a $5,000 donation to the Azie Taylor Morton Scholarship Fund.
ÂMs. MortonÂs dedication as commissioner to the Austin Housing Authority and her commitment to pursuing equal opportunity for people of all backgrounds has inspired the agency to dedicate this scholarship to her, HACA Executive Director James L. Hargrove said. ÂShe was a leading voice in the push for awarding scholarships to low-income residents, so this dedication would only be appropriate to awarding her efforts.Â
Morton served on the Housing Authority Board of Commissioners from 1999 to 2001. It was there that her good nature and drive for social justice helped to jumpstart HACAÂs scholarship program, which has awarded almost $200,000 in scholarships to low-income residents in the past four years.
HACA will formally present a resolution to both the president of Huston-Tillotson as well as MortonÂs family at its next Board of Commissioners meeting Aug. 19 at Lakeside Apartments. The resolution will state HACAÂs commitment to perpetually donate to this scholarship fund.
