EDGE regains support from many carriers as WCDMA has proven more costly than expected and suitable handset for WCDMA networks is not yet available.

(PRWEB) July 17, 2004 -- Research and Markets announces the addition of "EDGE, Competitive Assessment 2004" to its offerings.

EDGE was originally anticipated to be a niche technology. GSM carriers were expected to deploy WCDMA shortly after deploying GPRS. However, uptake of GPRS services has been slower than expected and WCDMA has proven more costly than expected and a suitable handset for WCDMA networks is not yet available. Due to these reasons, among others, EDGE has regained support from many carriers. This is especially true in North America, South America and throughout Europe where EDGE had gained the support of smaller-tier carriers looking to provide data at a reasonable cost per subscriber.

The study assesses the impact of EDGE upon the global cellular market. It examines the technology's role by geographic region and identifies key drivers in each of those markets. It analyzes the technology's influence on handset and infrastructure segments and it considers the various ways in which carriers are integrating EDGE into their service offerings. Shipments of EDGE handsets and device chipsets are quantified. Global base station deployments and subscriber forecasts are also provided.
