Frost & Sullivan's UPS Awards Press Release

Frost & Sullivan announces "voice of Customers Awards for the Indian UPS Industry"

Mumbai, India (PRWEB) August 9, 2004

Frost & Sullivan has announced the much-awaited “Voice of Customers” awards for the Indian Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS) industry. These awards recognize the outstanding efforts of industry participants that have earned customer acceptance and market leadership.

The award recipients were identified after a rigorous national-level research conducted among various UPS end-user categories such as telecom; industrial/manufacturing; IT & IT-enabled services (ITES), and data centres; large enterprises/commercial institutions; and small office home office/small- and medium-sized enterprises (SOHO/SME). The survey also included end users in prominent service sectors such as banking, insurance & non-banking financial companies (NBFCs); education; and hospitals.

Emerson Network Power took the lion’s share of the awards by bagging both the product line and customer service leadership awards in four verticals – telecommunications, hospitals, IT/ITES/data centres and large enterprises. Besides these, the company also won the customer service leadership award in the banking, insurance, and NBFC segment. This clearly demonstrates Emerson’s non-stop quest for excellence in meeting end-user requirements of innovative products and superior customer service.

Emerson narrowly missed taking the top honour as the “most preferred MNC brand” with American Power Conversion (APC) pipping it to the post. APC almost matched Emerson’s winning streak by clinching both the product line and customer service leadership awards in the education and SOHO/SME/small-medium IT companies segments.

In the “most preferred Indian UPS Brand”, D B Power Electronics emerged the winner apart from being recognised with the product line leadership award for their commanding presence in the manufacturing segment. On the other hand, Numeric Power Systems bagged the customer leadership award in the manufacturing segment apart from being presented with the product line leadership in the banking, insurance & NBFC segment.

Frost & Sullivan’s Product Line Leadership Award is presented to a company that has optimized its product line to offer suitable products in terms of price points & performance features as per market requirements. The Customer Service Leadership Award is conferred upon a company that has responded to the dynamic needs of customers and focuses continuously on helping them achieve both long- and short-term profitability goals.

About Indian UPS Market: In 2003, the Indian UPS market was worth Rs.1200 crores. Based on the power supply technology used, the market is segmented into three different categories: offline UPS, line interactive and online UPS. Offline UPS is used in applications below 1kVA, whereas line interactive finds usage in applications in the 0.75–3 kVA band. Online UPS, the technologically superior version, is used for applications in the 1kVA to 4000 kVA category and above. The maximum demand is for UPS in the 5-20 kVA band as it caters to SMEs that have moderate usage.

Online UPS is the most dominant segment in the Indian UPS market with a revenue share of 60 percent, followed by offline UPS, with 30 percent. Though offline UPS has the lead in unit shipments, it lags online UPS in revenue due to its lower ‘per unit’ cost realization. Meanwhile, the revenue share of line interactive is deteriorating rapidly, with just 10 percent in 2003. It is being increasingly substituted by online UPS, which not only provides better performance but also has a price point similar to that of line interactive.
