Lieberman Software Releases White Paper on How to Automate the Process that will Delay Windows Update from Installing Windows Service Pack 2 (SP2)

Beverly Hills, CA (PRWEB) August 15, 2004 -- Lieberman Software Corporation, a provider of mass management tools for Windows, announced today that system administrators can use User Manager Pro to quickly make the necessary registry changes to thousands of machines that will delay Windows Update from installing Windows Service Pack 2 (SP2). A white paper on this process can be found on the companys website - www.liebsoft.com/index.cfm/whitepapers.

Microsofts delivery of Service Pack 2 for Windows XP on August 16, 2004 via Automatic Update provides many desired security enhancements for home users, but can also wreak havoc in a networked environment where the effects of the service pack can be catastrophic in a matter of minutes of its installation.

Microsoft has provided a registry key/value pair that can be modified on each machine to inhibit the installation of the service pack for an additional 120 days to give the administrator enough time to evaluate SP2 and plan for its deployment. This change will prevent Windows Update from installing SP2 automatically, while allowing the system to still receive other updates. However, in large environments, it will be virtually impossible to make the required change to stop the installation on all machines before Automatic Update delivers the service pack.

User Manager Pro can make this change to all desired machines in a matter of minutes. Details on how to mass manage this process can be found on Lieberman Softwares Website - www.liebsoft.com/index.cfm/whitepapers . Besides making the change, User Manager Pros extensive logging capability will confirm if the change has been made or not. If any of the remote systems fail to take the change, User Manager Pro will create a background deferred processing job that will automatically retry the failed systems every 5 minutes until the change is applied.

The release of Microsofts Service Pack 2 for Windows XP promises a significant improvement in workstation security for home users," said Lieberman Software President, Phil Lieberman. However, its premature application in a server based network environment without sufficiently tested policies could cause major disruptions in overall operations. User Manager Pro makes it easy for administrators to get the breathing room they need to successfully integrate this service pack into their organization.
