European Biometrics & Security BV (EBS), based in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, announces a distributor agreement with biometric system manufacturer Techsphere from Seoul, South Korea. This year EBS will introduce Techsphere’s VP-II system for biometric access control and time attendance in 13 Western European countries. VP-II comprises biometric scanners, network peripherals and software for small and large scale operations. The VP-II scanner is the system’s most outstanding feature: it verifies a person’s identity by means of the vein pattern on the back of the hand.

People introduce themselves to the VP-II scanner by means of an ID card or PIN. In a quick, natural and effortless movement the back of the hand is then held up under the scanner, after which the identity is verified in less than half a second. The infrared camera which scans the vein pattern is installed deep inside the scanner. The pattern is matched with a template stored on an ID card or separate system unit. With 0.0001% false acceptances and 0.1% false rejections, VP-II ranks amongst the highest performing biometric access technologies available.

The unique vein pattern on the back of the hand proves exceptionally well suited for identity verification. The pattern can be acquired from virtually all people, regardless of ethnic origin or gender. It does not change from the age of 10 until expiration. Intensive manual labour does not affect performance. Decorations, damages or dirt on the hand are acceptable to a large extent. For optimal hygiene and forgery resistance there is no contact with the scanner’s lens so that no traces of the hand are left.

VP-II currently is in use at thousands of access point in a.o. Japan, South Korea and Singapore at police and army stations, intensive care units, server rooms, secure office areas and appartment buildings. The system has proven itself in heavy traffic at schools and dormitories. Applications include harsh outdoor environments such as construction sites.

EBS Managing Director Roessingh van Iterson: “In order to be accepted by a broad audience, we believe that biometric technology must be accurate, fast and very easy to use. The VP-II system meets these requirements. Moreover, VP-II has been designed with integration into third party systems in mind. The EBS team is committed to delivering quality products and services. Our strong relationships with VP-II distributors in a.o. the US and Germany guarantee smooth international operations.
