SERVING UP A LAMB'S HEAD TO HONOR A GUEST! World Kids are Cooking for Culture

In the midst of killings, hate and war, a mission for cultural understanding was born in a grassroots book, WORLD KIDS COOKOUT Celebrates Cultures in a Global Treasure Trove of Festive Recipes. Just released, the book takes readers on an international cookout with festive stories, secret recipes, and histories from 31 countries through something we all have in common-holiday, festival celebrations, and eating! But it is more than a fabulously fun read and cookbook; it is an mission for cultural exchange.

(PRWEB) August 30, 2004 -- Aika is a 6th grade Kazakh who tells how Kazakhs honor special guests" by presenting them with the head of a freshly cooked lamb, an ancient custom throughout Asia and still practiced today. The head is placed in front of the most honored guest" who removes different parts of the lambs head in a symbolic ceremony honoring the host and the hosts family.

To be presented with the lambs head is considered a supreme compliment, one that went unnoticed on Good Morning America when Diane Sawyer visited Turkey just before the War in Iraq. Much to her surprise, on the last day of her visit she was presented with a lambs head. Realizing they had made a mistake, her Turkish hosts quickly removed it from her sight. Despite high-tech communications, why is it we still know so little about each other?

In the midst of killings, hate, and war a mission for cultural understanding was born in a grassroots book, WORLD KIDS COOKOUT Celebrates Cultures in a Global Treasure Trove of Festive Recipes. Just released, the book takes readers on an international cookout with festive stories, secret recipes, and histories from 31 countries through something we all have in common-holiday, festival celebrations, and eating! But it is more than a fabulously fun read and cookbook; it is an mission for cultural exchange.

It is a celebration of life on planet earth, as told by the children from these countries with very diverse cultures, country celebrations, and recipes provided from their families kitchens. WORLD KIDS COOKOUT is a mission for learning, growing and respecting others. It is a book of the future. Its intent is to shatter misconceptions about Christians, Buddhists, Muslins, Yogis, Jews, and those of other faiths who have enthusiastically embraced each other in a stand for friendship.

Conceived, edited, and partly written by Lynn Manning Ross, it started from zero, took over 2 years to complete and the efforts of many organizations, parents, teachers and their students from around the globe. According to Ross, We are so-o-o-o slow to accept new ideas. But we can choose to take at least one step and begin to think of other cultures in a new light. This idea does not imply that one must embrace the beliefs of another. What it does imply is to think of anothers culture as unique to that cultures history not a flaw to be fixed.

In researching country histories, I began to see a deep-rooted human characteristic. As global citizens with common ancestors dating back hundreds of thousands of years, we have hardly moved a warring-inch from where we began. Back then we were trying to fix other tribes to be like ours. We reasoned that if we succeeded the other tribe would be like our tribe and therefore less threatening. 'Conquer or be conquered, that was the way of the day. Taught from millennia of ignorance, we are still doing the same thing today. Ancient hominids had an excuse. We dont! And many agree."

If fear, hate, and greed have never worked over thousands of years, isnt it time to find out what will? WORLD KIDS COOKOUT is a fresh voice where there doesnt seem to be one. It is a small step but it is a step! It offers a new beginning for all of us to learn about and from each other plus a fun family cookout with an exciting international flavor as well," Ross said.
