Winners for Americana Honors & Awards Announced in Nashville Ceremony

Loretta Lynn Wins Artist & Album of the Year; Mindy Smith Wins in New/Emerging Artist Category

In tonight’s third annual Americana Honors & Awards ceremony, held at the Nashville Convention Center as part of the 2004 Americana Music Association Conference, Loretta Lynn picked up two awards: Album of the Year and Artist of the Year. Newcomer Mindy Smith won the award in the New/Emergent Artist of the Year category. Rodney Crowell won the Song of the Year category with his track “Fate’s Right Hand.” Will Kimbrough won as Best Instrumentalist.

In addition, the crowd of Americana artists, music industry executives, entrepreneurs and press were treated to live performances by Live performances by Tony Joe White & Shelby Lynne, Steve Earle, Jason Ringenberg, Chris Hillman, Slaid Cleaves & Ray Wylie Hubbard, Mindy Smith, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Mavis Staples, Rodney Crowell and more.

Also in the Americana Honors & Awards ceremony, three Lifetime Achievement Awards were issued to the late Jack Emerson (executive); Chris Hillman (performer) and Cowboy Jack Clement (songwriter.) The President’s Award was issued to the Carter Family. And the Spirit of Americana Free Speech Award was issued to Steve Earle, who also performed at the event.

The Americana Honors & Awards were held at the fifth annual Americana Music Association Conference in Nashville, during which registrants were treated to Americana or “alt-country” music filling the streets of Nashville in the form of artist showcases, panels and other events.
