The Silent Killer
There are 18 million Americans walking around with the metabolic syndrome, a silent killer, and don't even know it. People must be educated to ask for thorough metabolic testing while they are still healthy.
(PRWEB) January 5, 2005 -- In a special article in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition and another article in The New England Journal of Medicine, Obesity has created an epidemic of sickly Americans with type 2 diabetes cases shooting through the roof. Dr. Dennis Gage, Obesity Expert and Endocrinologist states An estimated 20 to 25 percent of Americans or 18 million Americans have metabolic syndrome and dont even know it with 1.3 million new cases diagnosed each year". The metabolic syndrome is a collection of disorders that often precedes diabetes, and occurs when several disorders of the bodys metabolism are present at the same time such as obesity, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol. It has been rising steadily among adolescents and adults over the past two decades and is placing children at higher risk for premature heart disease, according to studies published October in Diabetes Care". The studies suggest that preventive steps should be taken immediately in children who exhibit this condition to ward off premature heart disease.
Dr. Dennis Gage, author of The Thinderella Syndrome points out that sixty percent of the U.S. population are deemed overweight or obese, and we must treat obesity if we are to prevent the metabolic syndrome. Dr. Gage claims that fad diets dont work and never will because people are not taught the proper behavioral strategies to obtain permanent weight loss. Dr. Gage also is using Berkeley HeartLab which uses advanced lipid testing to detect the small LDL trait (bad cholesterol). Small LDL particles are common in overweight or diabetic people and can show up in fit people. Dr. Gage states that endocrinologists are the first clinicians to diagnose the metabolic syndrome and are responsible for preventing the deadly vascular problems that cardiologists eventually deal with. Patients must be educated to ask for thorough metabolic testing while they are still healthy.
In Dr. Dennis Gages recently published book The Thinderella Syndrome: A Practical Guide to Individualized Permanent Weight Loss by Vantage Press, he describes the problem. People are enticed by a fantasy world with unrealistic goals." Diet books espouse using only one technique to achieve weight loss, namely a strict avoidance technique." Dr. Gage offers a custom-made group of behavioral interventions that, when applied, will work for each individual. Through his theory of The Three Rs of Behavior Modification (Realization, Regimentation, Reorientation), he describes what is involved in taking back control of ones eating lifestyle. From his twenty-five year experience working with obese individuals, Dr. Gage has developed a group of techniques for weight maintenance that he calls Defensive Eating Style." Through continued patterning and awareness, the patient is able to maintain a healthy goal weight indefinitely, and, if weight regain does occur, Dr. Gage describes his Red Alert" warning system that restores control back to the patient. Dr. Gage has helped hundreds of his patients lose weight permanently. With obesity now vying for the number one cause of American-related disease and death, Dr. Gage says You cant just do a diet, you must live one."
Dr. Dennis Gage is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, Endocrinology, and Metabolism. He is a Clinical Attending at Lenox Hill Hospital and has a private practice in NYC.
