United States Air Force Enforces Mobile Security Using Senforce

The U.S. Air Forces Air Mobility Command is able to go wireless" thanks to endpoint security technology from Senforce. Senforce EMSM gives Air Mobility Command flexibility to engage in secure wireless communication with air crews worldwide.

Draper, UT (PRWEB) January 5, 2005 -- Senforce EMSM gives Air Mobility Command flexibility to engage in secure wireless communication with air crews worldwide. Disables wireless when users are connected to the wired network, keeping intruders out. Senforce Technologies Inc., the leader in enterprise endpoint security enforcement, today announced that U.S. Air Force Air Mobility Command (AMC) is deploying Senforce Enterprise Mobile Security Manager (EMSM) to enable air crews to communicate wirelessly with headquarters as they travel from location to location.

Panasonic® Toughbooks®, the COTS rugged laptop of choice for USAF Air Mobility Command and Electronic Systems Command, provisioned with Intel® Centrino Technology and Senforce security enforcement software, will enable them to engage in communications with its forces globally. The Senforce software provides a level of security compliance management that effectively controls wireless connectivity and associated security issues.

Air Mobility Command needed the ability to exploit the use of wireless networks anywhere. For example, AMC needed to be able to automatically 'turn off wireless access when connected to the wired network so that their people wouldnt inadvertently be inviting intruders in. This isnt as simple as it sounds. In order to do this, AMC had to purchase a laptop, then contract with a systems integrator to remove the wireless antenna altogether. For security reasons, AMC was being forced to incur costs to disallow wireless, rather than taking the risk of using wireless technology unsecured. Senforce enabled them to take a much smarter and more strategic approach.

Lori Lane, vice president of Federal Sales, Senforce, added: The cost to AMC was potentially even higher, especially if it meant crew members wouldnt be able to connect back to headquarters from locations that have wireless LANs deployed. The only alternatives, in those cases, were either to attempt to connect using slow modem connections, or take down information manually from radio transmissions. That, however, is highly insecure and introduces a greater probability of error. With Senforce, productivity is maximized without compromising security policy compliance."

Wireless computing is growing at a rapid pace, with the daily addition of public, high-speed wireless Internet access from airports, train stations, hotels, campuses and even entire cities. Simultaneously, organizations are shifting steadily away from traditional desktops and buying wireless equipped notebooks instead. In fact, Jupiter Research predicts that U.S. businesses will buy more than 18.5 million wireless networking devices this year alone. The New York-based research firm also points out that while these technologies enable significant increases in productivity and efficiency, they leave organizations extremely vulnerable.

By pushing policy out to clients, enforcing it, and reporting compliance back to a centralized authority, EMSM helps automate endpoint security at several levels (user, data, application, and device)," said Chris Christiansen, program vice president, Security Products and Services, IDC. Senforce offers simple and transparent security for mobile users. This relieves them from having to make complex security, and potentially compromising, decisions." The impact [of not having secure wireless access] is that the majority of locations around the world would have unreliable connectivity between headquarters and air crews. Senforce enabled reliable secure communication with AMC headquarters using wired and wireless commercial networks. Senforce solved AMCs wireless security and control problems, enabling them to save money, improve productivity, and increase security.

Senforce ensures that security policies are enforced at all times according to directives-regardless of location. Rather than simply matching wired processes with wireless ones, Senforce EMSM enables organizations to customize policies based on location, such as headquarters, a remote base, or a particular hotel. Senforce solutions are built for military and homeland defense, and security concerns such as assuring regulatory compliance. Today, AMC headquarters can be assured, as crews board their C5s, C130s, C17s, KC135s and KC10s carrying their laptops, that they can securely access flight plans, weather, and command and control information.
