Official Restriction on the Building of Resorts and Tourist Properties Can Only be Good for the Environment in Tenerife
Back in early 2001 the Canarian Parliament passed a moratoria decreeing that all tourist building must be put on hold until an official review in 2006. One of the main reasons for this prohibition was connected to the fragile state of the ecosystem on the island and was welcomed by many environmentalist groups as well as many members of the wider Canarian community.
(PRWEB) January 8, 2005 -- Up until the decree, tourist resorts and properties were springing up all over the island to provide accommodation for the thousands of holidaymakers who flock to Tenerife every week. This prolific resort development meant that properties were often being built on natural spaces where the islands fragile flora and fauna had previously found a refuge. Dr Juan Rodrigez of TIIL (The Institute of Indigenous Flora) contends that the slowdown in building and the subsequent time out" that many green sites have experienced over recent years has seen various species of flora regain a foothold in the islands eco-system and begin to flourish. Whilst Tenerife needs resorts to provide beds for the holiday makers it is important that we maintain a balance between ecology and economy".
It was not only concern for the environment that prompted the restriction on new resorts and holiday property development. Over the last decade or so affordable accommodation for the average working family has become scarcer and scarcer as foreigners have snapped up bargain properties in the rural areas instead of the traditional holiday resorts. Now that developers and building firms have had to look elsewhere for construction opportunities they have focused on the residential developments which are allowed under the current moratoria.
But holiday makers and tour companies need not despair. Despite the decree there are still a number of approved plans in the pipeline which will add a further 50,000 tourist beds to the existing 354,000.
