UDC Hosts Freedom -- The Struggle Continues" -- the District of Columbias Observance of Dr. Martin Luther Kings Birthday
The Universit of the District of Columbia will be the site for "Freedom - the Struggle Continues" - the District of Columbia's 20th Annual Observance of the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., on Saturday, January 15th, 2005
Washington, D.C. (PRWEB) January 9, 2005 -- The University of the District of Columbia will once again be the site of the District's 20th annual citywide observance of the King Holiday. On Saturday, January 15, 2005, Mayor Anthony A. Williams and the D.C. Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Commission will host the commemoration by remembering the life, legacy, and birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Civil Rights Activists Elaine R. Jones, Esq., former President of the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, and Rev. Walter E. Fauntroy, Pastor of New Bethel Baptist Church are the featured speakers for this event. This years celebration will focus on the District of Columbias struggle for self-determination and voting representation in Congress.
Two "Living the Dream" Awards will be presented by Mayor Williams. The 2005 honorees are The Honorable Eleanor Holmes Norton and the Phyllis Wheatley YWCA. Mayor Williams and the Commission are proud to present this year's program which will kick-off a weekend of celebrations. Among those celebrations is a day-long opportunity to engage in service projects on January 17.
