Dallas-based publisher Sparklesoup Studios, Inc. has pledged 10% of net sales of any Sparklesoup published books and e-books sold on sparklesoup.com or amazon.com in January 2005 to UNICEF for Tsunami relief during January 2005. Propelled by personal experiences with Thai orphanages and children, President of Sparklesoup Studios, Inc. and author Kailin Gow made this pledge to help UNICEF help the youngest victims of the December Tsunami disaster.

Kailin Gow, author of over 20 books, including the Gifted Girls Series of fiction books for tweens, the new Queen B Superheroine series for teens, and the Fashion Fables Chick Lit series, knows firsthand about the plight of children in Thailand. During her senior summer at the University of California at Irvine, she visited Thailand. Fluent in the Chinese language and Asian culture, Gow was able to visit the universities of Thailand, as well as, a few orphanages. “The condition of the orphanages was beyond belief,” Gow said. “They were crowded, and the children were horribly neglected. The orphanage tried to do the best they can, but they could only do so much. There would be only one orphanage worker to 80 children or so, from what I can see. When I asked why the orphanage was as crowded as it was, one worker said that they tried to take in as many children as they can. It was better than the alternative – having the parents sell their children into the sex trade.”

After finding out that UNICEF was in Thailand helping out the children, Sparklesoup Studios, Inc. decided this was the charity to help the children of Thailand. “It is ironic that UNICEF has surfaced right now. I’m writing the second book in the Fashion Fables series, The Audrey Club, about a trio of Audrey Hepburn devotees. Audrey Hepburn used to be an UNICEF ambassador. With the Tsunami disaster, there will be more orphans, and they are very vulnerable right now.”

With over 130 books available for purchase on Amazon.com, Sparklesoup Studios, hopes this pledge will propel people to donate to UNICEF and the Tsunami Relief Effort. “Not only are you doing this for a good reason, but you also get a book or two in return. You don’t have to pledge a lot, nor for those who don’t need the tax deduction, you can contribute by purchasing a book. Some start at only $1.99,” Gow said.
