January 25, 7pm, Nuyorican Poets Cafe, Maria Cangiano Interprets Tango Songs with famous Maestro bandoneonist Tito Castro and Guitar Player Daniel Reyes-Llinas
Once more the Argentine performer Maria Cangiano interprets tango songs, this time accompany by one of the best bandoneon players of the United States, maestro Tito Castro and the Colombian guitar player Daniel Reyes-Llinas. The show features the history of tango music, its characters, and themes through its song repertoire.
(PRWEB) January 15, 2005 -- Misperceptions of Tango being simply an erotic dance have overshadowed Tango lyric tradition in the United States. Tango songs, as a poetic genre, are a specific expression of Latin American Melodrama. In contrast to other Latin American musical genres-for example Salsa or Bolero- Tango is a sad, nostalgic, and pessimistic music. Maria Cangiano has created a new type of Tango show, a journey through the history, the themes and characters of Tango songs since the turn of the XIX century until today. She performs traditional and unusual Tango repertoire, guiding the public through the history of this musical genre with anecdotes and historical information. The depth and power of Maria Cangianos woeful, soulful voice brings the nostalgic nature of the music to life.
Initially trained as an opera singer, Maria Cangiano, a dramatic mezzo-soprano, has perfomed in several New York Operatic venues, such as Regina Opera Theater, Dicapo Opera Theater and the well-known Amato Opera. Around two years ago, she created El Cuarteto de Maria, Tango Quartet, with David Hodges, bandoneon, Emilio Teubal, piano and Sergio Reyes, violin. El Cuarteto has been performing in several New York venues, bringing the Tango song repertoire to a wide diversed social and ethnical audience. El Cuarteto is a multinational Tango Quartet with its own original Tango arrangements, rooted in Tango, Classical and Jazz traditions.
Hector "Tito" Castro, a well known Argentine bandoneon player, has performed with the singers Libertad Lamarque and Roberto Goyeneche. He was the soloist for the Osmar Maderna orchestra. He has a recording called Buenos Aires Tango.
Daniel Reyes-Llinas studied at the Universidad de los Andes, Classical guitar with Carlos Castilla, Carlos Rocca Lynn, Jaime Arias Obregon and Jazz Theory with Santiago Zuluaga. He has attended master classes with Leo Brouwer, Eduardo Fernandez, Entrequatre Guitar Quartet, Ricardo Cobo, and Jorge Caballero. In 2001 he was chosen among the "Youngest performers" at the Luis Angel Arango Music Hall and this performance was broadcasted for the HJCK Radio Station in Bogota. One of his composition works is featured on the ECUA contemporary composers CD and became the soundtrack of the feature film "La Cascara de La Nuez".
The Nuyorican Poets Cafe offers a perfect atmosphere for this show, because of its ressemblance to Argentine old cafes and bars, where tango was performed in its origins. Dancers are welcome.
