Survey Finds Americans are Ready to Comply with New US Government Dietary Guidelines

LifeScript.com poll finds 54.7% plan to exercise more, but most are falling short of recommended daily exercise and fitness.

Mission Viejo, CA (Moniker/PRWEB ) January 14, 2005 -- The Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2005 has just been released by the government and the plan calls for Americans to increase their exercise and fitness and to reduce their risk for major chronic diseases through diet and physical activity.

LifeScript.com, the leading personalized vitamin supplement company today announced the results of the LifeScript Health Poll and found that Americans are planning to comply. We were pleased to see that the new Dietary Guidelines for Americans include increased exercise and fitness, good basic diet recommendations and a new focus on the importance of nutrients and vitamins." said LifeScript CEO Ron Caporale, In addition, it is encouraging to see that Americans in our poll are planning to improve their health in the coming year."

The polls were answered by over 10,000 of the subscribers to the free LifeScript Healthy Advantage Internet Newsletter. Americans pledged to exercise more for their New Years resolution (54.7%), the second resolution was to lose weight (32.1%), followed by stop smoking (9.4%).

However, the current exercise program of survey respondents does not meet the criteria of the new US Dietary Guidelines. The new guidelines call for Americans to engage in regular physical activity to reduce the risk of chronic disease in adulthood. Individuals should exercise a minimum of 30 minutes per day or 3.5 hours per week, and adults looking to lose weight should participate in 60-90 minutes of daily moderate-intensity physical activity while not exceeding caloric intake requirements. In the LifeScript Health Poll, 58.5% reported that on average, they do not get more than 3 hours exercise, the new recommended amount, each week.

The new Dietary Guidelines recommend the consumption of 2 cups of fruit per day, and over 54% of LifeScript Health Poll respondents are having more than 2 servings of fruit each day. Other poll results include: preferred workout location and the gym was selected by 27.8% and the home by 23.2% of respondents, 32.6% of participants report that they get less than 6 of hours sleep during the week and 43.1% of respondents dislike their body.
