Missing Dave Barry? Humor Guru Lets Readers Pick Their Own Replacement

Humorguru.com brings the columns of 8 award-winning humor columnists together in one place, to ease the burden of laughter.

“Humor is a very subjective thing and that’s why you can’t replace Dave Barry,” explains Todd Allen, publisher of Humorguru.com, a humor columnists portal launching on January 17. “Dave appeals to a ridiculously wide audience and was able to get out and find that audience when editorial boards were less concerned about humor offending a handful of overly vocal readers. In order to not offend the sensibilities of any community, a humorist seeking syndication has to tone things down worse than your average network sitcom. That’s why most humor columnists are exclusive to their local paper – they only have one audience to cater to. The days of Dave Barry and Erma Bombeck reaching so many papers are probably gone.”

Allen, a former web producer for the American Medical Association and humorist whose work frequently appears in the Manhattan weekly, New York Resident, has created a populist solution to this dilemma. Gathering 8 humorists from a variety of regions, backgrounds and media, he hopes to have created a collection of columns diverse enough to fit anyone’s sense of humor.

Illustrating this diversity, the writers at Humorguru.com :

•Represent 7 different states

•Have appeared on both Oprah and The O`Reilly Factor (without a legal entanglement from either entity)

•Appeared in syndication

•Resided on the New York Times Bestseller List

•Have been anthologized in the "Chicken Soup for the Soul" series of books

•Had their work adapted for television

•Have been recognized by New York Times, Maxim, USA Today, Shift, Chicago Sun-Times, The Guardian and Salon

•Have won The National Society of Newspaper Columnists award for humor columnists

“You can’t be all things to all people, especially where humor is concerned,” Allen explains. “That’s why it’s necessary to offer choices. Few people will like every column we’re offering up, but everyone should find at least one writer that strikes a chord with them.”
