ÂFrom out of a darkness comes light. The art of Maud Lewis brought light into her simple, rural life. It reflected an inner light that found joy in memories and imaginings of rural Nova Scotia, and the animals, landscapes, and activities that define country life. It brought light into the lives of those who saw and acquired her work, and who passed her wondrously painted home. It continues to illuminate the day of those who happen upon a painting, an article from her home, or the house itself.
In Maud's own eyes she was not an artist. Painting is what she did. She had no formal art training but painted cards and objects from an early age. She never visited an art gallery and knew few others who painted, but she knew that paint could be used to create images from her mind; that color, composition, and light could be manipulated to make images that pleased herself and others.
Joe Norris' paintings lift the spirit and relieve the heart of its burdens. His shining "peaceable kingdom of imagination and delight" was founded on the solid rock of Nova Scotia and his painted visions were founded in reality. When exposed to the harsh reality of daily life in a small fishing village during the Depression and the following decades, most would have succumbed to despair and bitter anger. Not so for Joe Norris who instead found great joy and inspiration in life's simple pleasures. Norris translated the joy he found in the world around him into paintings that expressed simplicity, color and his love of life itself. - Biographies, Art Gallery of Nova Scotia
