Referral Networks Still Working Magic Without the Expense

For the business owner, the challenges are the same: you need to get your name and your message to the world and you need to do it without running your business into the ground. For a lot of smaller businesses, this rules out most costly advertising or a stable of ace sellers. And while some are looking to new technology such as the Internet to beat the system, others are looking to the past to solve the dilemma.

According to Dr. Ivan Misner, author and founder of the world’s largest networking firm, the power of a referral organization to act in part as sales force and advertising has never changed, but that lately the appreciation of the fact has.

“People are certainly rediscovering the power of a solid referral network,” Misner says. “In many regards, it’s the both the most effective and most cost effective way to spread the good word about an individual or a company.”

Misner’s company, BNI (Business Network International), currently has chapters in 22 countries. When someone joins a chapter, Misner explains, that person carries several business cards for each member of the chapter, along with an intimate knowledge of what the specific individual’s strength’s are, thus, in Misner’s words creating a ready made sales team.

“Our members,” Misner says, “often know things about other members that a surface-level advertising firm would never get to. This intimate knowledge is inherently a powerful advertising tool. Why? Because it’s believable.”
