Boogeyman Director Stephen Kay Hopes to Inspire at Gainesville Screenwriting Workshop

Acclaimed writer/director/actor Stephen Kay will present a workshop on writing and directing feature films in Gainesville, Florida.

Gainesville, FL (PRWEB) January 21, 2005 -- Stephen Kay, director of the upcoming Sony Pictures release Boogeyman, will discuss the ins and outs of the movie business Feb. 12 and 13 in Gainesville.

Kay said he hopes to use the workshop to point aspiring writers and directors in the right direction. "I hope this workshop will give folks a little inspiration and a little guidance," Kay said. "We will go over the nuts and bolts of storytelling, discuss the parameters of the medium and the industry's expectations. But in the end, I hope to inspire people to tell personal stories," he said.

The Gainesville Association for the Creative Arts workshop starts out Saturday morning with a two-hour session in which Kay will discuss all aspects of the business, including coming up with the idea, formulating the story and getting it all down on paper. Topics also will include behind-the-scenes aspects of filmmaking, including financing the production and putting together a cast and crew.

Kay will screen and discuss clips of films submitted by workshop participants Saturday afternoon. The day wraps up with a viewing of Kay's 1997 film The Last Time I Committed Suicide, which he wrote and directed. The film was screened at the 2000 Sundance Film Festival.

On Sunday morning, Kay will field questions from workshop participants .

Kay said there is no secret to breaking into the screenwriting business, but that with perseverance, a good film will always succeed. "I am a firm believer that a good story is a good story and it will find its way into the right hands," Kay said. "After all is said and done, compelling material is what gets you in."

The registration fee for the two-day workshop is $110. For more information or to register, call (888) 917-7001 or visit the GACA Web site at: http://www.artsgaca.org. Registrants will be sent a map to workshop locations on the campus of Santa Fe Community College.
