Muslim Aid Sends 1,000,000 to the Tsunami Affected Areas
(PRWEB) January 22, 2005 -- In an emergency meeting today Muslim Aid allocated a further sum of 1,000,000 for relief aid in the tsunami devastated countries of Asia. This is in addition to the 100,000 already distributed by Muslim Aid volunteers and partner NGOs in Indonesia, Thailand, Sri Lanka and India.
Muslim Aid has established a field hospital in Aceh and dispatched groups of volunteers from neighbouring Malaysia who are now delivering relief and medical assistance in Aceh. Asian Resource Foundation based in Bangkok, a Muslim Aid partner NGO is delivering relief and assistance in Pukhet, Phi Phi and more importantly Ranoog near the Burma border. Our field officer Mrs Nung, who is currently in Ranoog, informed us yesterday that despite being seriously affected Ranoog has so far received no media attention simply because it is not a holiday destination.
Dr Jafar Qureshi, Muslim Aid Trustee and consultant Psychiatrist will be leading a delegation of councillors specialised in major disaster management. He has experience of having worked in Bosnia after the war and represented Muslim Aid after the Gujarat Earthquake in India in this area of trauma counselling.
Muslim Aid is fortunate to have established its own Muslim Aid South-East Asia NGO Alliance in 2001 with representatives from all countries in the region. Such NGOs are delivering Muslim Aid relief programmes in all countries including Indonesia, India, Sri Lanka and Thailand.
Volunteers from mosques and Muslim organisations are busy collecting funds for Muslim Aids relief effort and Muslim Aid hopes to raise a total of 4,000,000.
