Debut Author and Famous Uncle Bring Their Game and The Perfect Pitch" to Upcoming Borders Book Signings and Win One for Print on Demand

On March 5, 2005, at 2pm, Pasadena Borders Bookstore will hold a book signing for The Perfect Pitch, The Biography of Roger Owens, the Famous Peanut Man at Dodger Stadium" (Llumina Press, 2004). Graphic designer, artist, and also Owens nephew, Daniel S. Green is the debut author who has written this long-awaited incredible true-life success story, at times stranger than fiction, about Roger Owens, the beloved and internationally famous Peanut Man at Dodger Stadium - a success story that is also a major step for independently published books.

Pasadena, CA (PRWEB) January 24, 2005 -- On March 5, 2005. it will be a brand new game, for publishers and authors, that is. This year, Dodger Stadium and the book publishing industry will have one thing in common --a whole new playing field. As construction crews work around the clock to give the timeless ballpark a facelift appropriate enough for a city such as Los Angeles, so too is the business of book publishing heading for a makeover. But before all those would-be authors and jump-start print on demand publishers make an appointment for a chemical peel of fame and fortune filled with author tours, top ten lists, and print press managers who can send their children to college from one bestsellers success alone, and before all the traditional publishers gasp in mid-sip of their cups of caramel-flavored iced java, take note that all the traditional rules still apply.

No matter how a book is published in this instant, digital, high-tech era, the starting line-up for publishing success is full of proven all-stars. The speedy base stealers and heavy hitters here are strong storylines and character development, detail and writers style, professional cover design, thorough and seemingly endless editing, competitive list pricing, wide distribution, standard store discounts, quality printing, book promotion that seems even more endless than the editing, and of course, returnability. One book in particular has been working hard all last season in the minors. Now, its being called up to the Major League.

Green is the debut author who has written this long-awaited incredible true-life success story, at times stranger than fiction, about Roger Owens, the beloved and internationally famous Peanut Man at Dodger Stadium.

During the past 30 years or so, no less than four different people had expressed interest in writing it. For whatever reasons, the book was never written by any of those people, and the book and movie deals that were once there for the taking were, well, never taken," said Green, who is 30 and a graduate of CSU, Long Beach. So I asked Roger at a Barnes and Noble poetry reading night three years ago, if he would allow me to write his life story. He told me to go for it. I didnt want to wait for book deals or literary agents so I decided to find the best print on demand or independent publisher I could find, and I did with Llumina Press," Green added.

Barnes and Noble, the top selling bookstore in the nation, turned away Greens moving and uplifting print on demand biography because of what the bookstore deemed as having a cover that lacks professional design and layout."

Thats what their Small Press Department stated in a letter to me several months ago. I felt like my heart sank," confessed Green, a professional graphic designer, ironically, who designed the books cover. Who knows, the print on demand factor might have been the real reason, and theres still a stigma out there regarding print on demand, and in some cases, rightly so. But were getting nothing but wonderful, heartfelt and passionate reviews from men and women, age 12 to age 80. I even heard of a pastor who quoted it in his sermon and of those reading it in one day. And the cover, well everyone Ive heard from said its a beautiful cover. I knew the photo of Roger taken by John Gannon was 'the one the second I first saw it," Green said.

Borders, the second largest bookstore chain in the country, however, has been steadily opening its eyes and doors to a growing number of independently published books and authors. In fact, its store buyers decided to carry The Perfect Pitch" and now, with the baseball season approaching, its perfect timing to have Green and Owens do the book signings.

You know Barnes and Noble is a terrific and classy bookstore, and not to say I wouldnt do a book signing there, but their loss in carrying the book there is Borders gain," Green said. Both Green and Owens look forward to not only a book signing at Borders in Pasadena on March 5th at 2pm, but at Borders in Long Beach on March 13th at 3pm, and possibly one in Torrance, and a few other locations to coincide with baseballs opening day in April.

The book was available late last season at Dodger Stadium and quickly sold out, and the Los Angeles Public Library now has copies available to check out. Its also being considered for the Los Angeles reading program One Book, One City." The book was named Book of the Month" in March 2004 by BaseballAlmanac.com and was named Highlighted Title" in June 2004 by IndependentPublisher.com. The Borders appearance will be the first major bookstore signing for them.

It might not be the best way to go for many aspiring authors, but if you are fortunate with it, it can be a great stepping stone to bigger and better publishing endeavors," Green said.

And while Owens represents so much of what all Americans strive to be, with his consistent positive outlook, even in the midst of hopelessness, poverty, and times of real pain, debut author Daniel S. Green represents what many authors and artists strive to attain - getting noticed by the big players. Owens and Green remind everyone by their examples of how important it is to put all your enthusiasm into everything you do, whether tossing peanuts at the ballpark or publishing your first book.
