Nonprofit Legal Services Organization Calls on California Senate Budget Committee to Conduct Formal Investigation of Planned Parenthood of Los Angeles

Following the filing of a 25-page complaint by a former manager of Planned Parenthood in the Los Angeles Superior Court, a formal demand for a California State Senate investigation of Planned Parenthood has been made by the plaintiff's attorneys.

Sacramento, CA (PRWEB) January 24, 2005 -- The Pro-Family Law Center of Southern California (PFLC) has formally requested the California Senate Budget Committee to undertake an investigation of Planned Parenthood of Los Angeles. The request follows the filing of a 25-page complaint with the Los Angeles Superior Court on January 18, 2004. The complaint, presented under penalty of perjury, was filed by a former programs manager for Planned Parenthood who was allegedly fired after questioning the financial practices of PPLA. (Jones v. Planned Parenthood of Los Angeles, et. al. LASC Case No. BC327377).

Richard D. Ackerman, President of PFLC, wrote to Budget Committee members, We are concerned that your committee may send forth a budget that includes specific or general funding mechanisms for Planned Parenthood of Los Angeles. As you can see from the verified complaint, PPLAs independent certified public accounting firm has already attested to the fact that there was a failure in reporting requirements by PPLA. To our knowledge, these problems were never adequately dealt with since PPLA fired at least one person who was putting them on the road to recovery in terms of their financial systems. [We are confident that you will be able to readily identify witnesses who would be able to testify before your committee that PPLA literally fabricated financials during the last several years."

The request further states, Given the drastic state of budgetary affairs in the State of California, we are confident that a court would allow us to proceed against any action to formally approve of any line item that includes allocations or appropriations for disqualified organizations. Moreover, it seems that your obligations, as members of the Senate Budget Committee, implore you to prioritize funding to emergency health care facilities, schools, teachers, and other necessary services. It would be a waste of taxpayer monies to fund an organization that is neither qualified for grant/loan funding nor comparable to those organizations who provide emergency services and constitutionally-required services such as education. Ignoring our concerns will lead to protracted litigation in the form of various taxpayer suits based on California Code of Civil Procedure § 526a and California Code of Civil Procedure § 1085."
