Safety on Site Training Offers Complete Public Access Defibrillation Programs
Following the announcement of the first over-the-counter sales of Phillips HeartStart OnSite Defibrillator, Safety On Site Training offers local support for those communities, businesses, and churches wanting to implement a Public Access Defibrillation (PAD) program.
(PRWEB) January 22, 2005 -- In the US, approximately 1,000 people every day suffer sudden cardiac arrest (SCA). Currently, fewer than five percent of SCA victims survive, primarily because defibrillators are not immediately available. Each minute that passes for a SCA victim, the chances of survival decreases about 10%. After 10 minutes, few resuscitation attempts are successful. As fast as paramedics are, they cant be everywhere in the 5 minute goal that the American Heart Association has set for defibrillation in the prehospital setting. By implementing a Public Access Defibrillation (PAD) program and providing immediate treatment, you can dramatically increase the victims chances of survival. According to the AED Instructor Foundation, early defibrillation is critical for SCA victims, providing survival rates of up to 70% higher than with CPR alone.
Now that AED devices are becoming readily available to the public and prices are becoming affordable even to small businesses, it is necessary to ensure that those who establish PAD programs include an emergency response plan that addresses the national and state guidelines. Much like the broader EMS system, of which PAD programs are a part, optimal onsite emergency medical readiness requires planning, instruction, and management.
Although the AED units are easy to use, decisions such as the location of the device, how many people to train, and how many units to purchase is specific to each building where the AED is located. It is only with proper preparation and planning that the average person will likely have the skills and courage required to respond to a life-threatening emergency.
Although many AED manufacturers have national support systems for implementing PAD programs, having a local consultant to guide a company through the process of implementing a program specific to their needs is an asset. Safety On Site Training has capable and competent instructors and emergency response program specialists necessary to offer complete assistance in implementing a PAD program with local support. This program can include: evaluation of liability issues, assistance in choosing and purchasing an AED, obtaining medical direction if necessary, on-site training for the AED and/or other health and safety topics, assistance in developing an emergency response plan, and support following an incident.
Establishing an emergency response plan that includes an AED is an important step in being prepared for an emergency. Having a local consultant that can address all aspects of implementing an emergency plan will increase the confidence and courage of those who are called on to respond during an emergency.
Safety On Site Training has assisted many schools, retirement communities, athletic facilities, and businesses in implementing a successful PAD program using the ZOLL AED Plus and American Heart Association courses.
