Network Admission Management Solution Offered by Vernier Networks Reduces Intrusion Risks

Vernier’s Trusted Network Admission Management (TNAM), a key module of the Vernier Adaptive Security Platform (ASP), can now screen-and-block traffic from vulnerable devices as well as support client-less 802.1x authentication for wired and wireless networks. These features join existing ones that include AAA, containment and dynamic access policy control based on the state of the device.

Based on packet-tagging technology, Vernier’s new security screening feature can either block access or tag traffic for further inspection from vulnerable devices attempting to gain access to the network. In addition to screening, tagging and blocking, Vernier can authenticate and authorize the user of the device as well. These capabilities guarantee that only clean devices and authenticated users can access the network, significantly reducing intrusion risks introduced by vulnerable devices.

“Since we are a public network open to anyone with a laptop in the city, we take all the precautions necessary to secure our network – network admission management is top on our list,” said Carlos Vega, IT manager for City of Culver City. “We chose the Vernier ASP because it features comprehensive network admission functionality from patch management to this new security screening feature to assure that devices are clean before they get access to the network. By reducing risk of infection, we potentially save our small IT staff hundreds of hours of work.”

Vernier’s Network Admission: A Client-less Solution

Unlike other network admissions solutions in the marketplace, Vernier’s TNAM requires no additional client software on the desktop. Organizations already have too many security systems management, and patch-management desktop software, and they simply don’t need another client on their desktops. Vernier now supports single sign-on based on the 802.1x standard, which allows for the seamless use of wired and wireless networks. 802.1x reduces multiple password issues and unsafe password practices, as well as eliminates time-consuming authentication tasks for end-users as they move from network to network or building to building, thus improving employee productivity.
