Washington, DC (PRWEB) January 28, 2005 -- Class Action Reports, Inc. (ISSN 0746-7168), a leading publisher of print and electronic class action news and analyses, today announces the first annual Beverly C. Moore, Jr. Memorial Student Writing Contest. The writing contest is open to all law students enrolled in a J.D. or LL.M program. Submissions should focus on a current issue relevant to class action law and should be received by Class Action Reports, Inc. by Wednesday, June 8, 2005. The winning entries will be published in a future issue of Class Action Reports and will be featured at Class Action Reports Online.
The Beverly C. Moore, Jr. Memorial Student Writing Contest pays tribute to the over 30-year career of the former publisher, editor, and owner of Class Action Reports. Through his leadership, Beverly Moore led the legal journal to become the most comprehensive, analytical review of class action decisions in the country.
Mr. Moores passion for consumer justice and class action law began at Harvard Law School and continued through five years of work with consumer advocate Ralph Nader. In the 1970s, Mr. Moore wrote several books including The Closed Enterprise System co-authored with Mark J. Green and Bruce Wasserstein, A Modest Proposal for the Reform of the Capitalist System, and several chapters in The Monopoly Makers. Through the years, Mr. Moore authored articles appearing in legal periodicals such as the Yale Law Journal, the Antitrust Bulletin, the Legal Times, and the American Bar Association Journal.
By the 1990s, Mr. Moores legal work had earned him the reputation as a class action crusader, and he was often called on to consult and give expert testimony on topics such as the fairness of class action settlements and attorney fee requests. He often used his thought provoking Class Action Reports commentaries to discuss the merits of legislative efforts to reform class actions and provided useful suggestions such as "plain English" class action notices. Mr. Moore was a pioneer in the undeveloped area of nationwide class actions in federal and state courts, including the complex topic of "state law variations".
In later years Mr. Moores expertise spread beyond U.S. class actions. He assisted in drafting class action legislation in Ontario and Quebec, Canada. In his last trip abroad, Mr. Moore, along with three other legal experts, was asked by the Thailand Government, the Frank Hawkins Kenan Institute of Private Enterprise, and the American Bar Association to travel to Thailand to assist in the development of new Thai class action legislation.
"We at Class Action Reports, Inc. see the Beverly C. Moore, Jr. Memorial Student Writing Competition as a way to honor Beverlys knowledge, scholarship, and passion for class action law," said Stuart J. Logan, Editor-in-Chief, Class Action Reports. "Beverly would be pleased to know his journal is serving as a forum for the next generation of class action scholars."
