Wikia announced today the creation of the one hundredth wiki at Wikicities. (wikicities.com (http://www.wikicities.com)). Wikicities are wiki communities freely hosted by Wikia. A wiki is a site where any visitor can edit the content. The largest example of a wiki is Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. The 100th Wikicity is a German edition of the already popular WikiMac (http://mac.wikicities.com), which was previously available in English and Chinese. Anyone is free to start a new Wikicity.
Wikicities is creating wiki communities to develop free content with the MediaWiki software. Launched on October 18 2004, Wikicities is already the host of the largest number of MediaWiki projects outside of the Wikimedia Foundation (http://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Our_projects).
The hundred Wikicities received around 14,000 edits by 500 registered users in January 2005; the three busiest Wikicities (Creatures (http://creatures.wikicities.com/), Doom (http://doom.wikicities.com/), and Peace (http://peace.wikicities.com/)) have over forty active contributors and more than 1,000 articles in total.
This milestone in the project comes just three months after the creation of the first Wikicity last November. Today also saw the creation of a wiki in Italian, bringing the total number of languages represented on Wikicities to 15. The 100th wiki, German WikiMac, can be found at de.mac.wikicities.com (http://de.mac.wikicities.com/wiki/Hauptseite).
Jimmy Wales, founder of Wikipedia and President of the Wikimedia Foundation, and Angela Beesley, a member of the Wikimedia Foundation board, created Wikicities in October 2004.
The world's largest wiki is Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page), a free-content encyclopedia run by the Wikimedia foundation, which according to Alexa internet traffic rankings, is among the top 200 websites in the world.
Wikicities is an advertisement-supported service. The text of all Wikicities sites is freely licensed under the terms of the GNU Free Documentation License (GFDL). Re-users of the content must retain it under the same licence, ensuring it remains free. The MySQL database of every Wikicity is available for download under the terms of the GFDL.
