Summer Au Pairs Simplify Summer Childcare

Chicago area families looking for summer childcare have a new option to consider this year. Cultural Care Summer Au Pair is a cultural exchange/summer childcare program targeted at families with school-age children who are looking for quality, in-home childcare.

Susan Robinson is breathing a sigh of relief knowing that the one thing she doesn’t need to sweat this summer is her childcare. Last summer, the Robinsons were one of the very first families in the country to take part in a trial summer program - Cultural Care Summer Au Pair. This summer the program goes national and families across the country, including here in the greater Chicago area, are invited to take part.

The summer au pair program was designed with parents of school-aged children. Instead of juggling childcare options, families hosting a Cultural Care summer au pair have the comfort of knowing that the kids are always with someone they know and trust, with the convenience of not having to worry about how to get them from one activity to the next.

Cultural Care's summer au pair program was a great solution for our family,” said Robinson. “We don't need full time care during the school year, but we do from June through August. The kids spent their days outside at the pool, on the playground and enjoying summer outside with our Brazilian au pair, Renata.”

Summer au pairs are between the ages of 18 and 26, and are recruited from Poland, Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic, Sweden and Brazil. They provide up to 45 hours of childcare per week in exchange for a weekly stipend and the opportunity to experience American culture by living with a caring and open-minded family. In addition to watching the kids, summer au pairs can help keep the children’s rooms neat, do their laundry, and help out at meal time, giving busy parents the opportunity to spend real one-on-one quality time with their children at the end of the day.

Families who host a summer au pair also enjoy the benefits of cultural exchange. “Renata spent a lot of time teaching the kids about her culture. They sang songs in Portuguese, cooked traditional meals and learned about life in Brazil. Renata even taught Katie how to dance the Samba! They really learned something last summer while getting the kind of individual attention that I want for them.”

Cultural Care Summer Au Pair is a U.S. Department of State regulated program. As such, summer au pairs can only care for children over the age of two and are required to fulfill an educational training requirement before arriving at a host family’s home. All summer au pairs receive this important safety training at the Cultural Care Au Pair Training School in Long Island, New York during their first week in the country. Summer au pairs are available to Chicago area families for up to three and a half months of childcare beginning in early June.
