Storage Industry Leaders Back Data Domain NDMP File Server Standard - - Data Domain Submits Technology to Industry for Consideration as New Extension to NDMP Standard
Data Domain® today announced that its proposal to standardize an NDMP file server extension to the NDMP v4 specification has support from storage industry leaders such as Atempo, EMC Corp., and VERITAS Software.
Palo Alto, CA (PRWEB) February 9, 2005 -- Data Domain®, the leader in Capacity Optimized Storage (COS) solutions for disk-based backup and restore, today announced that its proposal to standardize an NDMP file server extension to the NDMP v4 specification has support from storage industry leaders such as Atempo, EMC Corp., and VERITAS Software.
Data Domain and other industry leaders will work with the Network Data Management Protocol (NDMP) working group in refining the standard. This initiative is intended to create a standard for backup applications wishing to use NDMP to drive backups to disk-based targets such as the Data Domain DD200 Restorer.
Data Domain is committed to expanding the capabilities and scope of disk-based backup and recovery," said Hugo Patterson, chief architect at Data Domain. Based on support from our backup software partners, this approach is ready to move to the NDMP community and we are pleased to spearhead the drive to establish a standard for the emerging area of disk based backup."
"The Data Domain NDMP file server specification is an important step forward in disk- based backup and we are excited to be part of this initiative," said Glenn Groshans, director of product marketing, Data Management Group, VERITAS Software. VERITAS is committed to offering customers continuous data protection software for heterogeneous environments and intends to be an active leader in the enablement of NDMP to disk."
Today, NDMP supports backup-to-tape but does not support backup to disk. There is no NDMP disk-based storage server that can accept data from an NDMP Data Service and store it in a file instead of on a tape.
The Data Domain extension defines an NDMP File Service for storing and recovering backup data on disk. The proposed File Service is fully compatible with existing NDMP data and tape services. The resulting implementation will allow connection to an NDMP Data Service to backup and restore to and from files on disks and offer capabilities that are not possible otherwise. For example, it would allow backup software to delete backup images when they no longer need to be retained. The current NDMP Tape Service does not have an action defined for deletion. The File Service will also allow connection to Tape Services so backup images can be copied to tape. This allows NAS devices to complete backup-to-disk before moving those images to tape, which will allow modern tape devices to store those images much more quickly and efficiently.
"EMC is committed to being an active leader of disk-based backup and offering our expertise in software to enable NDMP to disk within storage environments," said Rob Emsley, director of software product marketing at EMC Corporation. "As the co-developer of NDMP, we are excited to lead the NDMP charge with Data Domain and provide data protection solutions that provide customers with the ability to recover information more quickly and helping reduce complexities."
As its contribution to this effort, Data Domain has offered a complete sample open source software implementation that is available to all storage companies. The sample implementation and specification can be viewed at http://sourceforge.net/projects/ndmfs/.
"As a company that enables ILM through data protection software, we fully endorse the Data Domain push for a standardized NDMP file server. The Data Domain initiative for standardization is a welcome and necessary step for future ILM implementations," said John Meaney, vice president and general manager, ATEMPO North America, Asia and Alliances."
