How Did Belichick's Patriots Win 3 of 4 Super Bowls?

A new book, "Management Secrets of the New England Patriots," explains how and why Bill Belichick's New England Patriots have won three of four Super Bowls. Reviewers call the book "fascinating," "impressive," and "insightful."

(PRWEB) February 10, 2005 -- "Management Secrets of the New England Patriots" is the definitive account of the 2001-2004 New England Patriots, analyzing the many "success factors" underlying the team's three Super Bowl victories in four seasons and entertaining with humorous, insightful quotations from Patriots players, coaches, executives, and owners.

The author, James Lavin, earned his economics Ph.D. at Stanford, where he analyzed "high performance work organizations" (like the Patriots). He also holds degrees in political science (Harvard A.B., magna cum laude), economics (M.Sc., London School of Economics), and East Asian studies (M.A., Stanford).

John McClain writes in The Houston Chronicle, "Whether you're a New England fan or not, you'll be fascinated by [this intriguing new book." (Jan. 30, 2005)

The Toronto Star (Dave Perkins) calls the book "fascinating." (Feb. 5, 2005)

The Boston Phoenix (Christopher Young) says, "Lavin does have impressive credentials... but he doesn't bore us... Lavin has melded together fascinating quotes, statistics, and revelations that keep the reader entranced throughout the 350-page tome. A wonderful opportunity to [meet the players, characters, and team... Lavin's remarkable story provides the recipe for championship stew." (Jan. 31, 2005)

Greg Gatlin tells Boston Herald readers it's "An impressive look at what drives the team's success... It doesn't read like some wonkish, academic text." (Feb. 6, 2005)

"Timely, insightful book," writes Peter Finney in the New Orleans Times-Picayune. (Jan. 28, 2005)

The New York Times (Richard Sandomir) says "Lavin makes a strong... case that the Patriots 'are a better organization than they are a team.'" (Jan. 22, 2005)

It's "Required Reading... If the Colts, Steelers and any other NFL organization would like to get a jump on the Patriots, they should definitely pick up a copy," according to Dan Pires and Steve DeCosta of The Standard-Times of New Bedford, MA (Feb. 5, 2005).

And Doug Farrar writes on Yahoo! Sports that it's "A great book. Having read and enjoyed other football-as-a-metaphor-for-life books such as "The Packer Way" by Ron Wolf, "Winning the NFL Way" by Bob LaMonte... and "Think Like A Champion" by Mike Shanahan, I can say that "Management Secrets of the New England Patriots" is as comprehensive and well-written a book as you can find on this subject. ...It was his intention to merge his studies of high-performance organizations and his obsession with his favorite team. This he has done most admirably." (Dec. 31, 2005)

"Management Secrets" is essential reading for any serious fan of Bill Belichick's Patriots and anyone seeking to build a great organization.

Lavin believes the team's success has five main elements:

1. PLAYERS: Patriots players win not with NFL-best arms and legs but with championship caliber hearts and minds. The Patriots' mature, self-motivated, football-loving players possess what Belichick terms "The will to prepare to win" 365 days a year.

2. TEAM: A locker room full of professionals who respect and admire one another's dedication creates positive peer pressure. No player wants to let his teammates down. And each player knows winning requires helping teammates succeed. Players don't worry about personal stats. They focus on helping their team in any way possible. They don't care about outside accolades. They crave their teammates' and coaches' respect.

3. COACHING: Bill Belichick is perhaps the best prepared head coach since Vince Lombardi. The son of a successful detail-oriented football coach, Belichick began studying football at age 5 and has been listening and learning ever since. He surrounds himself with talented, passionate assistant coaches and develops their skills by sharing all his knowledge with them. In a sport in which 22 players move simultaneously, it helps that Belichick is the NFL's most skilled "Xs and Os" strategist.

4. LEADERSHIP: Belichick defines "leadership" as doing your job to the best of your ability and helping your teammates do their jobs. By that definition, every Patriot is a leader. Patriot players teach one another new skills and prod one another to improve in creative ways. Not every Patriot is vocal, but every Patriot leads by example through hard work, self-discipline, selflessness, and dedication to his profession.

5. PLAYER/SYSTEM FIT: Physically gifted players are not necessarily "talented." Football "talent" is whatever helps a team win. The Patriots' thick, complex playbook and Belichick's insistence that players become intimately familiar with each upcoming opponent would fail without smart, competitive, detail-oriented players. The Patriots find players with the passion and potential to thrive in their system requiring players who study and practice intensely.

Vol. 1 covers the team's achievements, teamwork, personnel, mentality, competing and disciplining, and Bill Belichick.

Vol. 2 (expected release: June 2005) will cover: the 2004 season, communicating, training, motivating, planning, strategizing, marketing and giving, and the Patriots' future.
