Changing the Houston Area Landfills One Gift at a Time

Houston Freecycle has been around since Nov 2003 and is part of the world-wide movement started by Deron Beal of Tucson, AZ in May 2003. Houston Freecycle is an online free service to offer and receive items for no cost to save the items from a landfill.

(PRWEB) February 12, 2005 -- Have extra items laying around the house? Replaced old outdated items with new items from Christmas? Looking to make room in your home for new items? Have broken items you don't want to throw away? Just wondering what generous people are looking to gift away?

If you answered yes to any of the above questions, www.freecycle.org may be the place for you.

Freecycle is a network of 2,285 individual groups, in over 50 countries. Each of the groups makes up a grassroots movement of 908,922 people who are giving (& getting) items for free in their community.

Each individual group is run by local volunteers. Membership to each group is free. Every group has a few rules in common: everything must be free, legal, and appropriate for all ages," and, no full moderation. Beyond these rules, local groups have their own localized rules.

Houston Freecycle has seen a number of items given away that total over 4 tons a month. There have been cars, living room furniture, bedroom furniture, and appliance all find new homes on the list. Is the item broken and just needs a little fix but you don't have the time? Houston Freecycle will be sure to have someone on the list that can take it off of your hands and give it a good home.

Freecycle (a.k.a. The Freecycle Network) was started in May 2003 to promote waste reduction in Tucson's downtown and help save desert landscape from being taken over by landfills.
