BlueCat Linux BSP Enables Embedded Software Customers to Fully Utilise High Performance Processing Capabilities of PowerPC 440GX for Most Demanding Networking and Storage Applications

LynuxWorks™ Inc. has introduced BlueCat® Linux® 5.1 support for the Applied Micro Circuits Corp. (AMCC) (NASDAQ:AMCC) PowerPC® 440GX embedded processor. Based on the Linux 2.6 kernel, LynuxWorks’ BlueCat Linux is an enhanced implementation of the Linux model that is uniquely constructed to be a stable, commercial-grade embedded operating system (OS) to deliver the flexibility and cost benefits of open-source software for use in a wide range of embedded systems. The BlueCat Linux board support package (BSP) for the AMCC PowerPC 440GX delivers immediate productivity benefits and optimised performance for the most demanding networking and storage applications.

The AMCC PowerPC 440GX embedded processor provides advanced processing capability with the versatility and bandwidth needed by high-performance embedded systems. With embedded state-of-the-art peripheral cores, this highly integrated device delivers CPU performance of up to 800MHz and is ideal for networking control plane applications, RAID controllers, iSCSI processing and storage area networking (SAN) equipment. Additionally, the AMCC PowerPC 440GX processor is based on a power efficient PowerPC core that is specifically designed for embedded applications.

The BlueCat Linux BSP offers developers an embedded commercial software environment where a balance of high performance and low power are needed for embedded design. In addition, LynuxWorks is the only embedded vendor in the industry to offer Cyclic Redundancy Check (CRC) and TCP/IP segmentation offload support for enhanced processing performance on an embedded Linux 2.6 kernel. For example, an AMCC PowerPC 440GX processor running without offload support will achieve less than 600 Mbps (60 percent wire speed) with full CPU capacity. With BlueCat Linux offload support enabled, the very same system can reach 850 Mbps (85 percent wire speed) with more than half of the CPU processor cycles remaining, enabling storage and networking vendors to realise the full performance of the AMCC PowerPC 440GX processor.

“LynuxWorks provides customers with a powerful Linux OS designed to meet developers’ stringent performance needs,” said Charlie Ashton, director of PowerPC software, AMCC. “BlueCat Linux offers a complete solution for customers looking for a mature, embedded Linux 2.6 solution to leverage the advanced features in AMCC’s PowerPC 440GX processor, such as high real-time performance balanced by high-bandwidth I/O. This, combined with an award-winning PowerPC architecture, gives embedded networking and storage developers a fast, flexible solution with which they can confidently build their products.”

“We are excited to extend BlueCat Linux support to the AMCC PowerPC 440GX processor, a proven, best-in-class technology for major networking, storage and consumer OEMs,” said Dr. Inder Singh, chairman and CEO of LynuxWorks. “We certainly remain committed in supporting AMCC’s embedded processors and share a common goal in ensuring that customers have the flexibility and connectivity needed to meet requirements for future demanding processor-intensive applications. Together, AMCC and LynuxWorks provide customers a remarkable level of bandwidth and connectivity for optimising applications running on the AMCC PowerPC 440GX processor.”

With the BlueCat Linux BSP, PowerPC 440GX developers can immediately begin designing software applications using the AMCC reference card. LynuxWorks BSPs also include advanced embedded development tools such as VisualLynux™ and SpyKer™. With these comprehensive tools and LynuxWorks’ world-class sales and technical support, developers can enhance product quality and reliability and rapidly deploy products to market at a significantly lower cost.
