Digital Mammography Arrives in Northern Westchester

Womens Imaging of Northern Westchester is proud to be the first office in the area to offer Digital Mammography, one of the newest advances in breast cancer screening. Digital mammography provides a sharper image of the breast that can be manipulated by the radiologist to optimize resolution and contrast," said Melissa R. Scheer, M.D., founder and director of Womens Imaging of Northern Westchester.

Mount Kisco, NY (PRWEB) February 13, 2005 -- Womens Imaging of Northern Westchester is proud to be the first office in the area to offer Digital Mammography, one of the newest advances in breast cancer screening.

Digital mammography provides a sharper image of the breast that can be manipulated by the radiologist to optimize resolution and contrast," said Melissa R. Scheer, M.D., founder and director of Womens Imaging of Northern Westchester.

Doctors hope that this new technology will enable Breast Imaging Specialists to detect a greater number of early breast cancers," she said. When diagnosed early, breast cancer has a five-year survival rate of 95 to 97 percent. Digital mammography is particularly beneficial for women with dense breast tissue for whom mammography poses a challenge, even to experienced breast imaging specialists."

A proven advantage of digital mammography is the reduced need for additional films, thereby exposing women to less radiation and saving time. Digital images are generated almost instantly, moreover, which reduces patients anxiety.

For a woman waiting for her mammography results, minutes seem like hours," said Dr. Scheer.

Dr. Scheer, a Womens Imaging Specialist, has interpreted over 50,000 mammograms in the last decade. Prior to establishing her own practice, she served as the Womens Imaging Specialist at Northern Westchester Hospital and at Northeast Radiology.

In addition to introducing new technical advances, Dr. Scheer also practices old-fashioned techniques of compassion and personal service. Every patient has the opportunity to meet with Dr. Scheer personally and discuss her test results at the office visit.

My goal in establishing Womens Imaging of Northern Westchester is to transform what is so often a cold, frightening, and impersonal experience into one that is nurturing and empowering," said Dr. Scheer. To that end, the office features soothing décor, relaxing music, and a welcoming staff, along with a private, comfortable changing area.

Though current guidelines recommend mammography screening every year for women beginning at age 40, many put off having this crucial, life-saving screening test, due in part to their hectic lifestyles," said Dr. Scheer. Some women, who are otherwise healthy and fit, seem to have a false sense of security, thinking that breast cancer will not happen to them. But the disease strikes women of all ages, ethnicities, and socio-economic backgrounds."

In addition to mammography, Womens Imaging of Northern Westchester, which opened in December of 2003, offers breast and gynecologic sonography, bone densitometry, and breast biopsies.

With Digital Mammography now available in Mount Kisco, women in Northern Westchester have an opportunity to take advantage of state-of-the-art innovation right in their backyards.

Im very excited to be able to offer this cutting-edge technology to my patients," said Dr. Scheer. The earlier breast cancer is detected, the better the chance for successful treatment."
