International entrepreneur and author Laurel Delaney announced the release of “Global Guru: Shaking Things Up, Making Things Happen,” a manifesto which enables entrepreneurs and small businesses to expand internationally. The guide offers practical information to empower individuals to go global.

According to “Global Guru,” 97 percent of U.S. companies exporting are small businesses. The Department of Commerce reveals that 230,000 small businesses in the United States together export roughly U.S. $1 billion per day, or U.S. $300 billion per year. The U.S. Small Business Administration’s Office of International Trade indicates that America’s small businesses are becoming big players in international trade and that their role is growing rapidly.

“The timing has never been better for business owners to get out of their own backyards and transition from local, regional or national firms into global players,” said Delaney, CEO of Laurel Delaney Company, a leading professional services firm that specializes in global entrepreneurial development. “The explosion of small businesses crossing borders in the last few years is largely attributable to the Internet, with businesses seeking new ways to tap into the more than 95 percent of the world’s consumers who live outside the United States.”

“Global Guru” provides 12 key qualities of the spirit and intellect essential to pushing boundaries, including:

• Learning about the culture in which you are about to do business.

• Being adaptable, taking risks and innovating.

• Valuing a relationship more than the deal.

• Taking action when needed and implementing relentlessly.

In addition, “Global Guru” offers a checklist of 20 factors to consider before going global and invaluable Web resources for conducting market research and locating key customers.

Many small business owners have thought about expanding internationally at some point, yet most do not. Only about 10 percent of small businesses are involved in the global marketplace. Delaney has devoted her entire career to the quest of closing the gap between thinking of going global and making it happen.
