The Registry is a web-based service that helps investors find, evaluate, and select high quality financial professionals. Jack Waymire, Paladin founder and author of WhoÂs Watching Your Money? The 17 Paladin Principles for Selecting a Financial Advisor said there are two major markets for this service. One is baby boomers who suffered severe losses in their retirement accounts during recent bear markets. The other is current retirees. He says both groups have been flocking to advisors the past few years because they believe the professionals expertise will help them win back losses, preserve retirement assets, and improve future returns. What they donÂt know, based on Paladin research, is that more than 75% of advisors are not the investment experts they purport to be.
Instead, they are sales representatives who use expertise as a sales tactic to win investor trust and assets. Waymire said, ÂThatÂs why millions of investors change advisors every year. At some point they realize they didnÂt turn their assets over to a real expert. This usually occurs years later when results donÂt match the excessive expectations that were sold to them.Â
Waymire goes on to say Âthe Registry solves several problems for these types of investors. ItÂs not enough to find someone you hope is an expert. You have to ask the right questions and know good answers from bad ones to make sure advisors are every bit as knowledgeable and trustworthy as they say they are. Even more important, itÂs not what advisors say that counts. ItÂs what they are willing to document in writing and make public.Â
Waymire acknowledged PaladinÂs high minimum standards are designed to limit who can be admitted into the Registry. Comprehensive, independent research reduces the number of advisors even further.
Substantially less than 10% of the advisors who have been screened by Paladin professionals have made it into the Registry. The result is a web-based service of high quality professionals thatÂs the first to provide:
High admittance standards that protect investors from bad advisors
A quality rating for each advisor thatÂs expressed in stars
Online access to a profile and disclosure statement for each advisor
Full disclosure for compliance records, compensation, investment expenses, and potential conflicts of interest
Advisor agreements that put investor interests first
Waymire said investors can use the Registry service for no charge or obligation. Plus, identities are protected until investors decide which advisors they want to interview. Meanwhile, theyÂve been able to view the advisors ratings, profiles, and disclosure statements in advance.
