Noisier events in Iraq have been diverting public attention from this theatre. But there has been growth creep in the total force here too. Centcom's early deployment was capped at 10,000 in January, 2002. "However, U.S. commanders insist the new troops are proving excellent allies in combat operations against militants near the Pakistani borders and that the multiethnic army is accepted by villagers in the Pashtun-dominated south, where the Taliban drew their main strength."

Zog's tricks never change. Just the locales and names. The Pashtun are far away the majority ethnic group in Afghanistan. So Zog naturally allied with the 'rainbow' coalition of Uzbeks, Turkmen and Tajiks collectively known as the "Northern Alliance". The "Northern Alliance" was kept on minimal life support until it suited Zog's purpose to make mammoth blood transfusions to resuscitate them.

In Iraq they're playing the same game with identity politics among Shi'ite, Kurd and Sunni groups. In former "Yugoslavia" it was majority white Serbs who were to be purged by providing an 'edge' to Albanians and Croats.

Take a look around the planet. I doubt there's 10 'country' polities that couldn't be 100% destabilized in a few months by the same process.    Japan is the only major exception to this among the "G8" industrialized countries. I don't know of any country in the Americas that couldn't be reorganized this way.
