Raising drug free children- What every parent should know

Author Alan Cramer has some advice for parents. “Although nothing can guarantee that your children will stay off of drugs, there are some preventative measures you can take,” claims Cramer. Here is his list of five things that parents can do to help keep their children on the right path.

First of all, talk to your children about drugs; you’d be surprised how many parents don’t do this- until it’s too late. If you don’t tell them drugs are wrong, who will, the neighborhood drug dealer?

Cramer’s second piece of advice is, know their friends. You can tell a lot about your child by their choice of friends. Sometimes this can be a wake up call for parents.

Third, don’t assume anything or take anything for granted, just because you don’t give your child money. This doesn’t mean that he/she can’t get drugs. Most recovering addicts will tell you, “The First One’s Always Free.”

Fourth, encourage reading. This includes reading to younger children. Drug use often stems from ignorance of the consequences. Reading is one of the best ways to thwart ignorance.

And finally, don’t use them yourself- need I say more.

Alan Cramer is the author of the novel, “God Helps Those…” $14.00 (ISBN: 0975320513). This novel exposes the effects that the crack epidemic of the ‘80’s had on the Black middle class.
