Author Alan Cramer has some advice for parents. ÂAlthough nothing can guarantee that your children will stay off of drugs, there are some preventative measures you can take, claims Cramer. Here is his list of five things that parents can do to help keep their children on the right path.
First of all, talk to your children about drugs; youÂd be surprised how many parents donÂt do this- until itÂs too late. If you donÂt tell them drugs are wrong, who will, the neighborhood drug dealer?
CramerÂs second piece of advice is, know their friends. You can tell a lot about your child by their choice of friends. Sometimes this can be a wake up call for parents.
Third, donÂt assume anything or take anything for granted, just because you donÂt give your child money. This doesnÂt mean that he/she canÂt get drugs. Most recovering addicts will tell you, ÂThe First OneÂs Always Free.Â
Fourth, encourage reading. This includes reading to younger children. Drug use often stems from ignorance of the consequences. Reading is one of the best ways to thwart ignorance.
And finally, donÂt use them yourself- need I say more.
