Martial Arts is Not Martial Therapy Says Industry Leader in Response to Jennifer Aniston Report
One of the most influential leaders in the martial arts industry says it is irresponsible for Cameron Shayne, Jennifer Anistons karate instructor, to make public comments about how Aniston, discusses her emotional problems with him.
(PRWEB) February 20, 2005 -- John Graden is the author of How to Open and Operate a Successful Martial Arts School and the Executive Director of the Martial Arts Teachers Association.
Graden says he is happy that entertainment celebrity Jennifer Aniston has discovered the positive mental benefits of martial arts, but draws the line when instructors portray themselves as therapists.
Graden says, Martial arts has fantastic and proven mental, physical and spiritual benefits. Everyone knows that. I was excited that another high profile star started training in the arts. My excitement turned cold though, when I read Mr. Shaynes public statement that 'I'm more than a trainer. Jen talks to me about her emotional problems."
Graden, who has pioneered the movement toward professional standards and education for martial arts teachers, has concerns that such statements may create confusion among the public about the martial arts. Martial arts are a proven method of creating confidence and self-control. However, when an instructor positions himself as a therapist, then he should be a licensed therapist, not a black belt playing doctor. No credible therapist I know of would create media releases about their work with a patient."
Graden says he hopes Aniston continues to train and makes it a personal goal to earn a black belt. Martial arts can make a huge difference in anyones life. When high profile celebrities get involved it draws attention to the arts, which is great. But, the instructor has to be responsible, safe and professional in how they work with anyone, especially a star. Star power can help us all but it can also blow up and these kinds of claims can light that fuse."
Palm Harbor, Floridas John Graden is the author of many books and programs designed to help martial arts instructors increase standards of performance and safety. He is the founder and director of the most successful professional associations in the industry and serves as Executive Director of the Martial Arts Teachers Association (www.martialartsteachers.com).
